We had the good fortune of connecting with Tux Loerzel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tux, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing that people don’t realize about podcasting is just how much work goes into it. When you’re listening to a podcast it feels like you’re just listening to two friends chatting and laughing together, but there’s so much going on behind the scenes that the average listener never knows about. The more fun and effortless it sounds, the more effort there likely is behind the scenes! Our podcast, Beyond Reproach, requires a great deal of research and writing before we can ever even get to recording. Hours and hours of research and then hours more of editing drafts before we get to a point where our story will sound like a cohesive narrative just casually told by one friend to another. Then from there the recording needs to be edited, which takes even more hours and skill, and finally we can publish a finished hour of content.
One of the most difficult, and most important, things to keep up with is consistency. We publish new episodes once a week which means making sure we keep going each and every week, but having a cohost means we get to share the responsibilities.
Of course, having said all that, it can also be a heck of a lot of fun.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Beyond Reproach is a comedic history podcast about scandals and scandalousness in American politics and government. Each episode we explore the sordid stories of America’s past, all while drinking historic cocktails, talking too much, and generally making fools of ourselves. We try really hard to make our show a lot of fun to listen to even though we sometimes talk about some really heavy subjects. Of course, the historic cocktails help. Even though we’re in our 5th season, this show is still really fun and exciting to work on because we try to tell stories that many people have never heard about. We’re both big history nerds of course, we wouldn’t be doing a history podcast otherwise, but we think that what we do makes American history really fun even for people who think history is the most boring subject they can think of.
It hasn’t been easy. Some of the heavier topics we’ve covered can really weigh on you. But we try to balance it with some levity to make it fun both for our audience and for ourselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I actually recently moved to Detroit, Michigan, which is an incredible city with a vibrant art and music scene and a truly dizzying energy of excitement and rejuvenation in the air. Anyone planning a trip here has to check out some of the bars in the alleys downtown. Especially on a summer weekend night, there’s nothing more fun than taking the Q Line downtown to go to the Skip or Standby. There’s also an incredible cocktail scene in the city too, so be sure to check out Time Will Tell, Candy Bar, and Bad Luck Bar. For the size of the city, Detroit also has an unbelievable number of amazing restaurants. My favorite place to take someone new to the city though has to be Grey Ghost. You won’t regret the trip.
While you’re here, be sure to stop by Eastern Market for some fun shopping, and rent a bike to ride through the Dequindre Cut greenway and the riverwalk park. Of course, a trip to Detroit wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Motown Museum.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my podcast cohost, Stephanie Domingo, for all the hard work she does to help make our podcast the best show it can be. Not only does having a cohost make recording our show incredibly fun, but it also means that all the struggles and hard work are shared by someone just as devoted to what you’re doing as you are. Stephanie is always there to pick up the slack when I’m having a tough time, and I literally wouldn’t be able to make this show a reality without here. I couldn’t ask for a better friend or a better cohost.
