We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ty, why did you pursue a creative career?
It’s really the only thing that I can say has always just fascinated me. Growing up I was always told about the idea of a safe job and all that that comes with and the benefits of it. But for me it always seemed like you could never really be you in those environments. I have always enjoyed the idea of creating something from my own mind due to my love of cartoons, anime, movies, etc. I felt like art was something I could use to help express my own personal narrative, while also being able to have that free spirited approach to allow my imagination to run wild.

Also I think coming from where I come from I wanted to show the communities there that you can be something more than what they preach to you. That you can overcome all the odds and do it your own way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think for me it’s a constant process of looking and reacting. I’ve always been drawn to imagery, but it has only been heightened by me being an artist. I take from my daily life and try to communicate certain ideas or scenerios that I have either experience or can relate with. Especially with being a Black man I think its important to just make sure that I tell stories through my work that both show the struggle and beauty that exist within the African-American community. I think the biggest challenge and lesson I’ve learned is to never doubt yourself. Always remember that your voice is unique and what you have to say matters.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I am from Houston Definitely would have to hit the MFAH and CAMH to see what exhibitions are up at the moment. But other than that hit the Breakfast Klub for that Chicken and Waffles. Go checkout a movie at The Rooftop Cinema Club Uptown. And just explore the sites and unique atmosphere that the H-town has to offer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Man theres a ton of people I can give thanks. Of course my family, Dr. Alvia Wardlaw at Texas Southern University, and all the homies and people I met throughout my time in graduate school at Pratt Institute. And just everyone who has supported me in any way big or small it’s really appreciated.
