Meet Ty Anderson | DJ Fly Ty

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ty, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I saw a DJ at a family reunion and watching him control the crowd with the music he played piqued my interest. I watched him the whole time and later told my parents I wanted to be a DJ. They didn’t take me seriously because I was only 7 or 8 at the time. About a year later my older sister, who was twelve years old, started a jewelry making business. Watching her earn her own money made me want to earn some of my own. My interest in DJing never went away and my parents saw that I was serious and supported me. Earning my own money felt really good and at that young age, I realized the sky was the limit.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been a professional DJ for the past nine years. As an eighteen year old, I have more experience than DJs twice my age. As a DJ, I am in control of the music provided at a plethora of events. Those events can be anything from a birthday parties (all ages), fashion shows, school dances, sports and community events, and more.
I am currently the youngest DJ for the 2021 NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks. As a game day DJ, I provide the music for the crowd throughout the Fiserv Forum before the start of NBA games, and sometimes through the end of half-time. I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished so far. Some of those things are: Co-author of the children’s book “Mom, Dad, I want to be a DJ,” 5 appearances on SiriusXM, a member of iHeart Radio V100.7 MixSquad, a member of the Reewind Radio Network crew, among other things.
What sets me apart is my age, my years of experience, and my knowledge about my craft. It always surprises people when I play music that is considered before my time. To me, good music is always relevant. Throughout the course of my career, I’ve had several older, more experienced DJs give me advice and guidance. I am very appreciative of them sharing their knowledge with me.
One of the challenges I had early on was my age. Sometimes, people were hesitant to book me because I was so young and they didn’t think I could rock their party. Proving them wrong was how I overcame that challenge. I’ve learned many great lessons so far in my career, but what stands out the most is it’s never to early (as far as age) to pursue your dream and to never give up.
I want the world to know that DJ Fly Ty is here to stay and will become a household name.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Kenosha, WI, which is 40 minutes south of Milwaukee. With that being said, we would start by visiting Franks Diner in Kenosha, which has been featured on several food and travel shows. Another town favorite we’d visit is the Daily Dose Cafe. I’d also like to take them to Milwaukee and hopefully we could attend a Bucks game, go to Discovery World, stop by the America’s Black Holocaust Museum, and dine at some of the great restaurants in downtown Milwaukee.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have had a great deal of support over the past nine years that I’ve been a DJ, but the people who supported me the most has been my parents, Tommy and Katrina Anderson. I started this journey at a very young age. I couldn’t drive, I didn’t know a whole lot about different genres of music, I couldn’t book my own gigs, I couldn’t write contracts, and a ton of other stuff I couldn’t do own my own. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my dream and continue to do so.
