Meet Tyler Lee Cushing | Cinematographer and DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Lee Cushing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler Lee, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from a small town in Northern California called Sutter Creek that is halfway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. It’s a beautiful town that has wonderful sweeping vistas and a vibrant history. The land, as well as my friends and family, shaped who I am today. One of my grandfather’s was a photographer and painter who I really looked up to as an artist. I really admire my father as well. He showed me the technical side of art and the hard work that goes into it. I have to give a lot of credit to my mother, who gave me all the freedom to be who I am and to learn with love and compassion.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a cinematographer, photographer, Dj, and founder of The Glitter Factory – a film and event production company.
My artistic approach in all of my endeavors originates and stems from visuals. For instance, when I’m working on my cinematography and photography I will usually have a song or melody in mind and follow the feel and emotion of the song to capture that as close as possible with my lens. Same goes for my Dj’ing. When I am creating mixes and moods I try to visually see what those songs might be doing in a setting to create a whole new space at it’s end. I incorporate both of these schools of thought when I create video mixes to play through my videosynthesizer to provide visuals on an array of CRT’s while I am doing DJ sets at The Glitter Factory and various other late night clubs and after hour events.
Some lessons I have learned along the way are to find what you love to do and run with it, who knows where that joy will take you. Be open to all paths. You might fail along the way a few times, but don’t give up on it. Be weird, be fun. Take risks, do things you don’t understand, take the time to learn those things. and have fun doing it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a big foodie and more of a night owl so most of my places will need to have delicious food and drinks and late night offerings. Some of my serious must eats would have to be Angels Tacos in NoHo, Salazar in Frogtown, R101 in Glendale, and The Little Jewel of New Orleans in Chinatown. A few spots for a great drink would be Tiki-ti in Los Feliz, Tonga Hut in NoHo, Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park, The Airliner in Lincoln Park, and Walts Bar in Eagle Rock. Some great event and late night party spots we will have to check out would be The Lodgeroom in Highland Park, Academy in Hollywood, Sound in Hollywood, A Club Called Rhonda, and Bootie LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give my shoutout to my stunning wife, Stephanie Reese. She supports me in ways I never knew were possible. She gives me the courage to continue with my dreams and aspirations. Stephanie is the partner I have always dreamed of. We have the best time tackling projects together to have our work come out with the best possible results.
