Meet Tyler Nelson | Growth Marketing Director & Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Be easy to work with but not in the traditional sense. Instead of being agreeable, focus more on these three essentials: be an expert at what you do, be an exceptional communicator, and deliver on your word. In my experience, these three practices will set you up for success. Reason being, your team will never have to worry about your contributions, and that is what makes you easy to work with. I would argue that being agreeable is actually a detriment to someone’s professional career. It keeps an individual from standing out and if you cosign a bad idea then you are going to be on the hook for not speaking up.
Of the three essentials, the one I would advise someone to prioritize is delivering on their word. This is bigger than a career essential, this is a life essential. Delivering on your word will have a positive influence on your career, your relationships, and set you up for life. If you say you are going to do something, do it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m nine years into my marketing career and it’s been a rewarding journey. My career started in the non-profit world with marketing senior living facilities in Minnesota. It was a great place to start in hindsight because I worked in an office next to the senior facility. I got to see the direct impact of the work I did. That’s rare in the business world. It’s uncommon to see the people who’s lives you affect. It inspires you to be better. Since then most of my jobs have been website related marketing positions supporting colleges and universities.
Over the last four years I’ve also had another job, which is content creation with my wife Saina. Professionally, it’s very different from what my primary job function is and I love that. Not only is the job function different, but also the language. We create content in my wife’s native language of Farsi and we tell stories that resonate with Iranians. It’s pure creativity and it allows me to explore another side of myself. One that involves storytelling, human-reflection, and acting. Seeing my wife in her element and how talented she is in this space has been eye-opening. A lot of the good fortune we have in our life is due to this world of content creation.
Managing two careers can be quite challenging. It requires you to switch gears and in short order. One minute I might have a presentation for high-ranking college administrators and the next I’m acting out a comedic role in a different language. Time management is crucial in my day-to-day and fortunately the scheduling has become smoother over the years. My best piece of advice to others balancing two careers is give yourself some grace. Burnout is hard to avoid but try to find your time to relax and unwind. You are taking on a lot and deserve to pat yourself on the back for the work you put in.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a South OC resident it would have to start with a coffee from Milk & Honey in Aliso Viejo. They make the best mocha and the owner provides excellent customer service. From there we would stroll downtown Laguna Beach and enjoy breakfast at Moulin, a French cafe. After breakfast we would head up the coast to the town of Newport Beach and layout at the beach. After spending some time back home, we head out for a late lunch at Puesto. Sensational tacos and margaritas that will make my friend very happy. Then it’s up to Anaheim for an Angels game and post-game fireworks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful to so many, but four people in particular have elevated my life beyond measure. First, my wife Saina who shows me what true love is day in and day out. I’m the best version of myself with her and we are so in sync that our connection feels telepathic. She is the reason I can even call myself a content creator in the first place. Saina exposed me to this whole new world and it has become a big piece of our life together and something to bond over. She always believed in me and who I am as a man. Our life together has been molded by her unwavering loyalty and strength. She’s my wife, my love, and the queen of our household.
I must shoutout my parents for all their guidance and love. They are always there. Growing up they were always at the baseball games, at the school events, and to this day I know if I ever need them they will be there – point blank. Plus, they shaped me into the man I am today. I’ll always be grateful for that. I wish everyone could have parents like I have. The world would be better off.
Professionally, I owe a lot to my former boss and mentor Adam Dince. Adam was my boss early on in my career and taught me most of what I know today. A brilliant marketer with a special talent for seeing the potential in the people around him. His expertise and passion inspired me to work the same way. Without his influence, I would not be where I am now.
