We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyra Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyra, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first moved to Los Angeles back in 2018, I was in total ‘GO Mode’. And, my work-life balance was basically nonexistent. I was all work and no play. Friends would ask me to go out to eat, hang out at the beach, etc, but I was so hyper-focused on making it, that I wasn’t interested in doing those things. But, now that I have made it to a comfortable place, my body has been telling me to rest. So, now, I work hard to have a great work-life balance. If I had to put a percentage on it, I’d say I’m 60/40 work/play these days.
I love the balance I have now, of course, I could stand a little more play, rest, or exploring the world, but, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Hustle culture will have you out here grinding your hands to the bone, and.. I realized that I need my hands!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a multi-diciplined Creative. I moved out to Los Angeles for my Acting Career, which is going pretty well, but I also massaged other creative outlets along the way! I am the Host of an amazing podcast called Affirmations for Black Girls and although it started as a hobby, it has become so much more. I’d say I’m most proud of what I have created over there.
I am also a Pastry Chef. These days you can find me on cooking shows, showcasing my skills, curating menus, or creating fun and festive treats. I love how LA has helped me realize that I can explore all of these creative routes. Yes, my main career goal is Acting, but, its important for me to have creative outlets along the way, and if they generate income, that’s just a bonus.
I’ve been in Los Angeles for 6 years now, and it’s been tough, the most challenging part is my mental. I’m far away from home, missing milestones, and building a life from scratch. Hell yes, its hard, but, I know that if I truly wanted to, I could go home. But, I am grateful for the journey, and I’m not planning on going anywhere any time soon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I travel anywhere, I prefer to immerse myself in food and culture. Here’s what we’d do.
Have Chicken & Waffles from Roscoes at Hollywood Lake Park.
If they’re here on a Sunday, we’d hit the Leimert Park Sunday Market.
We must have tacos. I absolutely love Chicas Tacos and Tu Madre. I know there are other places, but these are two of my favs.
If they wanted to catch a movie, we are going to The Alamo DTLA, because why not?
I also love a good food tour, so we’d go to Koreatown and try Dim Sum, Bao Bun, Bubble Tea, Taiyaki, the whole nine!
Most people would say beach, but, honestly, the beach has never wow’ed me, so if im driving in this LA traffic, we’re going on a hike! Maybe the Escondido Falls hike, if the waterfall is flowing, or maybe a ride up the PCH!
Having a good time in LA is all what you make it. Im not the person to turn to if you want to do the super touristy things, But, I’ll try to give you a good mix!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shout-out to the late Robbin Hardy. The First Lady of my home church in St. Francisville, Louisiana. I like to say she’s the person who taught me how to dream. And, what I mean by that is, without her planting seeds in me at such a young age, who knows if I’d dream as boldly as I do today? For that, I am forever grateful.
