We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyree Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyree, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose a creative career because I have always been passionate about the fashion industry. Growing up, being very crafty and resourceful, people would ask me what they should wear, or if things matched. Eventually, I started going through closets, matching pieces and helping friends and family get ready. I liked that people valued my input on fashion when it came to their personal style. From there, my confidence grew; pushing me to want to pursue a creative career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Fashion Styling, Entrepreneurship and Visual Merchandising Instructor on the college level. I co-host a podcast that celebrates costume design in tv and film and I work on various other projects.

I started my career as an intern at a photo studio in downtown LA. While I was an intern, I was going to school and working retail. A girl in my class worked at a pr firm and they were looking for interns, so I started interning there. My career really grew from there, that company took me under their wing and let me flourish. After my career in PR, I went into interior design, but working on the marketing side.

After doing marketing for interior designers, I went back into retail, except I was more into the visuals. Although, I wasn’t in the visual department, I was always with them. I was asking questions, like can I change the mannequin? What’s the floor set? Then I understood that I loved visuals and merchandising. I started organizing closets, old friends would reach out and be like are you available to help on this shoot or can you help with this project and I have been forever grateful.

One thing I am very proud of is earning my Master’s Degree. I am an advocate for learning, whether it be formal education or just taking in new information. So even though I downplay it, I am proud of my Masters.

My journey has not been easy. It has been up and downs financially, physically and emotionally. Covid was a game changer, tearing my achilles, learning how to walk was wild but life is a journey. I think what has helped me has been my tenacity, my drive, my passion, being empathic, leading and always moving forward.

What I would like people to know about me is I am hard worker and problem solver. I completely invest in every project I am apart of, I enjoy collaborating with other artist and I am currently working on projects that will be out in the future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I always take people to the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach, they love to see that. Rodeo Drive at night is very special there are no people and the window displays look amazing. Take a drive down the PCH, go to Malibu and take a drive down Sunset and Hollywood Blvd, go to In-N-Out. We would definitely go for a hike, either Griffith Park or Runyon

Brunch or Happy Hour – Escala K-town

Breakfast/Lunch – Toast Bakery

Rooftop Hollywood – Mama’s Shelter, Rooftop Downtown- Broken Shaker or the Ace

I like going to The Grove and Farmers Market

Dinner I would do Laurel Hardware, El Compadre is a must and Uovo

Also, we will go to The Getty Museum and probably a flea market.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out the book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. In my friend’s book club, we read that book. It helped me get out of my head and care more or less about certain things. I recommend that book to everyone.
