We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrell Mims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyrell, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success to me is not measured by what you achieve physically. It is not just a one time feeling due to accomplishment neither. It is more a spiritual and emotional feeling. For example, many young athletes aspire to go professional in their respective sports. There is a very slim chance that we may all go pro, and if we do not make it, do we say we “failed”? Not at all. Success is made up of all of the mini-milestones you achieve overtime on your journey’s path. Getting better 1% more each and everyday and never taking steps back. That’s success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What makes me different from others is my drive, passion, and way of thinking. The people and things I dedicate myself to will expect nothing but my my all and everything I have to give. I tend to think of others before myself, which led me to want to go on and take the sport of football serious and being in the position I am in now. Wanting to earn a free education so that I may not be a burden to my family pockets. Making my incarcerated father proud as he lives my life moments through me. Showing other kids from my community that dreams come true and anything is possible, if you work for it! This is not a easy road as my goal is to someday pursue the NFL, and what I have learned on this journey is that when opportunity presents itself, you go and snatch it. Coming from where I am from in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, the word “opportunity” is scarce. Fixed mindsets instilled in almost everyone thinking that nothing better can come from where we are from. On June 8, 2024 I hosted the first ever free “Tyrell Mims Alumni Back to Give Back Football Camp” in the city of Philadelphia. I know for sure that I touched the hearts of many of those children as I looked into their eyes and seen a younger me in each and every one of them. I want the whole world to know that many wins and losses can come with this life and what you are chasing. Some cases more losses than wins, and some more wins than losses. But end of the day, the feeling of success comes from the grind that you put into what you believe in and nobody can stop you from achieving!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend to come visit for a week and would love to have a fun time and be safe at the same time, I would take them to downtown center city Philly. Plenty of nice food spots with beautiful aesthetic, awesome sights and sounds of the city, and great people to meet and network with.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my mother (Rasheedah Mims) for placing me in positions in order to grow and become a better man from birth. Keeping me out of trouble in the streets and introducing me to sports.
I would like to shoutout the football coaching staff at Martin Luther King High School located in Philadelphia, PA. Also were a great part of my story as we created a movement that changed the game in not only athletics, but the entire Philadelphia Public Schools System. Changing the lives of young men and women from similar low-class backgrounds.
Also, I would like to thank Villanova University for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. Giving me the chance to earn a Bachelors degree, plus more, from such a prestigious University.
