We had the good fortune of connecting with Uzma Khan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Uzma, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I decided to start my own business, my thought process revolved around several key factors. Firstly, I wanted to create something where I could combine my professional skills with a personal vision. Having worked in finance and later in IT, I realized there were gaps in the market, especially in providing customized software solutions that aligned with clients’ specific business needs. I wanted to be in a position where I could provide value-driven services, and working under a corporate structure often limited that freedom.
Secondly, I recognized the importance of taking control over my career trajectory. Starting my own business allowed me to push the boundaries of innovation and explore new opportunities in both software development and business processes.
Lastly, I was driven by the idea of making an impact, not only through delivering high-quality software but also by creating a positive work environment for my team, one that fosters creativity, growth, and learning.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business, Cathect Sdn Bhd, is a Malaysia Digital (MD) Status company that specializes in custom software and Mobile Apps development, ready-made solutions like hospital and school management systems, process management, and software testing. What sets us apart is our dedication to tailoring each solution to the unique needs of our clients. We don’t just deliver off-the-shelf products; we dive deep into our clients’ challenges and build solutions that are scalable, secure, and aligned with their goals.
I’m particularly proud of our focus on innovation and quality. We’ve integrated a strong emphasis on agile methodologies, ensuring continuous improvement and fast, adaptive solutions for our clients. This client-first mindset has allowed us to form long-term relationships, where we don’t just act as vendors but as strategic partners.
Getting to where we are today has been a journey with its fair share of challenges. It was far from easy, especially in the early stages. Finding the right talent, securing initial clients, and managing cash flow were major hurdles. To overcome these, I had to stay persistent and flexible. Networking was key—I leveraged my connections and participated in industry events, like those organized by MDEC, to build credibility and acquire clients. I also had to be adaptable, learning from mistakes and adjusting strategies quickly to respond to market demands.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that resilience and adaptability are crucial. The business landscape is constantly changing, and you need to be willing to pivot, explore new opportunities, and be open to feedback. Another lesson is the importance of team-building. Surrounding myself with talented and motivated people has been essential to the company’s growth.
What I want the world to know about Cathect is that we’re not just another software development company—we are problem-solvers, committed to delivering value. Our story is one of passion, persistence, and constant growth. We aim to push boundaries, whether it’s through advanced technology, exceptional service, or empowering our clients to achieve their goals.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to several key people and groups who have been instrumental in my journey. First and foremost, my family, especially my mother, has been a constant source of support and encouragement. Their belief in me gave me the strength to take risks and start my own business, even when the path seemed uncertain.
Professionally, I want to recognize my mentors and colleagues who guided me throughout my career. They not only helped sharpen my skills but also inspired me to think critically and push beyond conventional boundaries. A special mention goes to my team at Cathect Sdn Bhd. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment have been pivotal in bringing the company’s vision to life.
I also want to acknowledge the invaluable networking and learning opportunities provided by organizations like Mdec, and International Trade Council, where I’ve connected with like-minded individuals and gained insights that helped me scale my business.
Finally, I’d like to mention books like The Lean Startup by Eric Ries, which played a crucial role in shaping my entrepreneurial mindset, helping me embrace adaptability, innovation, and customer-centric thinking. All these influences have come together to shape who I am today, and I’m deeply grateful for them.
