We had the good fortune of connecting with Valentina Perez George and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valentina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Creating The Cosmic Bruja came naturally as I transitioned into a new part of my life as a mother & artist. I transitioned from acrylic painter to digital artist when my daughter was born. Now looking back, its one of the best choices I ever made. I have always been a self taught artist. I come from a family of creators who constantly dream up new ideas and visions. Digital art allowed me to express my visions with much more ease. Slowly I began creating artwork for other artists and musicians who needed help bringing their ideas to life. Creating for other artist is one of my favorite parts of my business now. Bringing someone else’s vision to life is truly a magical process. Its always the reaction when I reveal the completed project that keeps me going and inspires me to continue on my creative path, wherever that may lead. I have now created logos, concert/event posters, book illustrations, portraits, album covers & only continue to add on to this list!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My story begins at the young age of 5, when I Immigrated to CA from Argentina with my family. Like many immigrant families, we didn’t focus on much except surviving. This really pushed me to teach myself most of my skills and gave me an “out of the box” mentality when it came to learning. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve drawn. My mom would actually let me paint my walls with random designs I thought of growing up. I was never able to afford going to art school and so at a young age I began selling my paintings and creations with my sister under the business name of Natural Mystic. We sold at various Markets including Melrose Trading Post.
After the birth of my daughter, I was unable to keep up with painting and selling at markets so I decided to save up and invest on a Ipad. I knew digital artwork was the way to go as it allowed for a lot more versatility and a lot less mess (with a newborn). With the amount of information online, I was able to teach myself most things. I started then started sharing my artwork and realized just how much I was able to tap into this mystic side of art. As soon as I began creating for other musicians and other artist, my soul burst with joy and lets just say have never looked back.
The Cosmic Bruja to me is a symbol of the mystic and creator. I love being able to connect with likeminded artists & people to bring something new to life. Its like magic every time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend coming into town I would take them the following places:
First stop is always coffee, I would take them to Los Feliz to visit The Bourgeois Pig.
We would then visit local records stores to find some rad music and of course used book stores, my favorite is The Iliad Bookshop in North Hollywood.
I always like to find a way to connect with nature so a hike would be awesome, although not in the city, my recommendation would be Vasquez Rocks which is near our little homestead.
Dinner would include some ramen, Jinya Ramen is one of my favorites .
Dancing would only happen at Good Times at Davey Waynes which always has the best 70’s throwback music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The shoutout is to my Daughter Opal and Partner David Knopf. Those two are the reason I’m where I’m at today as an artist. Their support and love is what allows me to keep moving forward into my path. My partner David is an LA musician (KNOPF) and always inspires me to create and express myself. Together we live in a high desert homestead and also work for an incredible Nature Immersion Program in LA called EverWild, in which I’m the Registrar and David is the lead mentor for our Forest Pre-K & Kindergarten. Without this “day” job which is more like a passion job, we wouldn’t be able to support our artist lifestyle. We have managed to find a way to life a life of nature, art and music, for which I’m so grateful for.
