Meet Vernon & Jasmine Chatman | Owners of Pop’N Flavors Gourmet Popcorn Shop

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vernon & Jasmine Chatman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vernon & Jasmine, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance has been one of the most challenging aspects of life. My husband and I have 2 children and sometimes we see it take a toll on them. We often leave the house, and they ask if they can come too or when we come home from a long day they’re waiting by the door to give us these big hugs and kisses to tell us that they’ve missed us. Our business is open 6 days a week from 11am-7pm, so we spend majority of our time away from the kids. Not only that, but it can be difficult to schedule time with other family and/or friends, or to simply have “me time”, but it’s a sacrifice that we’re to make because we know it will pay off.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are the owners of Pop’n Flavors, which is a gourmet popcorn shop in Long Beach, CA that offers over 250 flavors of savory, spicy, sweet, and vegan flavors. The most awesome thing about our business is that there is no other place like it in the southern California area. Our customers are blown away when they walk into the shop and see 90 flavors to choose from. We offer 3 free samples to each customer allowing them to taste their favorite flavors before buying. We love seeing and hearing their reactions to the flavors. Starting our business was not an easy task. It took a lot of money, patience, faith, and perseverance. My husband and I relied on each other for words of encouragement even when things would get tough. We learned fairly quickly that there is a solution to every problem. When encountering problems, always focus on how to make the situation better, and never focus on how bad the problem is. We want the world to know that our brand is special to us. It’s a family business that caters to families of all ages and races. Our products are with made with love and we strive for excellent customer service in order to best serve each and every customer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely the beaches. I really like Huntington, Newport and Santa Monica beach. I’d also take them to West Hollywood for dinner nights. I’ve had some of the best food from the restaurants in West Hollywood. I would also definitely visit some of the small businesses because a lot of them are hidden gems with specialty foods and snacks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to thank our parents for their generous financial contribution as well as for their time for supporting us with the start-up of our business and with our children. They have been so helpful and patient with us as we continue on this journey.
