We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Rock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Veronica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t like punching in a time card. I wanted the freedom to work for myself. I thought I had the chance to make more money if I had my own business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The medium for my art is sterling silver and natural stones.. I would like my jewelry to be recognized because of the unusual designs and unconventional ideas.
I am proud that I made a business from doing what I love. I did this with a shoe string budget. I supported myself and my son and I got to spend time at home raising him and making a living at the same time.
The hardest challenge was to get stores to take a look. I have found resistance from stores at trying different designers.
I think that the most important lesson that I’ve learned is to do what I love and have the determination to make a living at it. I overcame this challenge by not giving up.
I want the world to know that my intention is to make jewelry that cannot be resisted.
My brand represents good quality and pieces that can be handed down from generation to generation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in the San Fernando Valley in the vicinity of Hollywood. The iconic Hollywood sign would be on the itinerary. Eataly at Century City and then Musso and Frank on Hollywood Blvd. topped off by seeing Grauman’s Theatre. To get home we would take a drive through Beverly Hills and go over Benedict Canyon. It would be fun to eat at Barney’s Beanery on Santa Monica in West Hollywood for a fun bite to eat and the best chili. If we wanted to stay close to home we could take a walk on Ventura Blvd. or take a day and go to Universal Studios.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Connie Parente was inspirational for me. I started designing jewelry with her concepts. We were neighbors in West Hollywood. She had a great business going and I realized that this was possible for me too.
