We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Victoria, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor to my success has been authenticity. My style of choreography was always rejected in choreography school and I was never allowed to show my original ideas. The teachers did not approve of the sensual quality or difficulty of my choices and would force me to make changes they thought were best before any audience ever saw the work. Now that I am working independently I’ve shown people my style and they love it. I have always stayed true to my own style in creation and although I’ve been inspired by others, I have never let the opinions of others cause me to conform to the new choreographic norms of the Tiktok era. There’s a lot of pressure on social media implying that to be considered good or cool, you need to dance in the same uniform way everyone else is. I believe that everyone enjoys my work because it is not like anyone else’s.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I really connect most with realism and I believe thats really shown through in my art. What sets my work apart from others is that it’s honest and approachable. It’s a feeling that I had, that I want everyone else to have. The works comes from inside my personal feelings. It was not easy for me to be able to become so available through my work. I many times did not believe in myself because people considered what I was doing to be subversive, or unacceptable. The odds were seemingly always against me and people did not believe in what I was doing. It was my own growth in believing in my work and in my self that has brought all of my ideas to fruition. The most valuable lesson I have gained through this process is you need to be an advocate for yourself and tell people who you are, rather than allowing them to tell you who you are.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My #1 pick of local fun for friends and family visiting would be Venice, but more specifically the canals. The canals in Venice are tucked away in the chaos of Venice and is perfect for pictures. It’s also surrounded by excellent Mexican restaurants which are a pillar in the foundation of LA’s culture. You can also walk along the beach afterwards and find lots of art and murals and meet new people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my many friends and followers for encouraging me to go on. After being put down for so many years I actually took a long break from dancing/performing all together. It was the overwhelming amount of support I got to begin again and for the work I created when I did begin again that has kept me going.
