We had the good fortune of connecting with Vizan Giri and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vizan, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind our success has been investing in our supply chain. We work directly with the farmers who grow organic cotton that we use to make our products. We have chosen to make our products from ORGANIC and FAIRTRADE cotton grown by family farmers in India. The organic cotton used in our products is grown without using GMOs, and harmful and toxic inputs such as herbicides, and pesticides. It means a healthy life for farmers, workers and consumers as they are not exposed to toxicity and runoff, which also contaminates food systems and waterways.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Terra Thread was created to offer customers a sustainable option at an affordable price. After realizing that there was a lack of backpacks made of natural fiber, we decided to create bags that are good for the people and the planet. The majority of the bags in the market are made of synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon and other plastic-based materials. These synthetic-based bags deplete our natural resources and have a detrimental impact on human lives and the ecosystem during their production, usage and even post-usage. To solve this problem, we decided to make bags using 100% organic cotton canvas. Additionally, sustainable products can be pricey, and at Terra Thread, we offer our products at a competitive price. We also offer our customers free shipping, no matter their order size.

In 2017, we launched Terra Thread with just a few bags, and today, we have added more products to our collection, including apparel that is Regenerative Organic Certified®.

As a brand in the sustainable sector, we consider many environmental and social factors in every part of the supply chain- from the farm where the cotton is grown to make our products to the logistics of how we ship our products to the customers. This has led to slow growth, but we are proud of the steps we have taken to build Terra Thread as one of the sustainable AND affordable brands in the market.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from Orange County, an evening picnic with tacos from Pedro’s at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point is a must! We would probably spend a day or two in Catalina driving around in a golf cart and riding zip lines. I’d also take them for a day in and around Newport Beach/Balboa Island riding duffy boats. Orange County has so many parks and beaches with good sightseeing and hiking trails- Red Rock Canyon Park Trail, Crystal Cove State Park, O’Neill National Park, and Top of the World are some of the trails I would like to take a friend to. And, of course, lastly, a full day at Disneyland eating churros and riding their famous attractions (especially going to Star Wars Land).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Based on where I am, I do have to recognize my father, Vik Giri. He is also my fellow co-founder here at Terra Thread. Working with him at Gallant International Inc., a certified B Corp and Terra Thread’s parent company, has taught me the difference a company can make in its community. Through his work at Gallant, I was introduced to the world of what a truly transparent and traceable supply chain entails, which eventually shaped the work we do at Terra Thread.
