We had the good fortune of connecting with Wei Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wei, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I attribute my success to my ability to always think a little bit more or one step further than others. As a detail-oriented and hardworking individual, I believe that constantly pushing myself to go beyond what is expected has been crucial in my career advancement. By anticipating the needs of the project and envisioning potential creative solutions, I have been able to contribute effectively to the films I’ve worked on. This mindset has allowed me to excel as an editor and secure the promotion to lead assistant editor at Ignition Creative in only one year.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
effective communication and collaboration are essential aspects that set editors apart in their work. While every editor brings their unique skills and vision to the table, the ability to effectively work with directors and other crew members is what truly sets us apart.

As an editor, I understand the importance of building strong relationships and fostering open lines of communication with the director and the rest of the filmmaking team. Collaboration begins with actively listening to the director’s vision and understanding their creative goals for the project. I make it a priority to engage in thoughtful discussions, exchanging ideas and insights to ensure that the director’s vision is translated onto the screen.

A key aspect of successful collaboration is maintaining a flexible and adaptable approach. I strive to be receptive to feedback and willing to make adjustments to the editing process to align with the director’s evolving vision. This collaborative mindset allows for a seamless flow of ideas and a harmonious working relationship, ultimately leading to a stronger final work.

Additionally, understanding the unique roles and perspectives of other crew members is crucial. I actively seek opportunities to collaborate with cinematographers, sound designers, and other creative professionals to ensure that all aspects of the film work harmoniously together. By fostering a collaborative environment and valuing the expertise of each team member, I believe in creating a more cohesive and impactful cinematic experience.

Getting to where I am today professionally has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. It certainly wasn’t easy, especially as an international student navigating a new country and language barriers. However, I overcame these challenges by staying focused, embracing every opportunity to learn and grow, and seeking guidance from mentors like Thomas Harris, Paul Seydor.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of perseverance. I was working on a short film, MIDNIGHT HONG KONG, which was a promotion used as a beginning film for Hongkong Film Festival. There were times when this project didn’t go as planned, or I faced setbacks. but I never let those obstacles discourage me. Instead, I used them as opportunities to learn, adapt, and improve my skills. Every experience, whether positive or challenging, has contributed to my growth as an editor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Film is the most amazing thing in this world. My best friend also likes film. We are in the film capital of the world! Why not do a film trip?! I would take him to iconic film landmarks like Hollywood Boulevard, the Walk of Fame, and the TCL Chinese Theatre. We would also explore famous studio tours, visit film museums like the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and check out independent cinemas and film events. Additionally, we would seek out filming locations, indulge in movie-themed discussions, and perhaps catch a movie premiere if possible. I’m so proud I got a chance working here.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a heartfelt shoutout to Thomas Harris, my film professor at Chapman University. He was not only a strict professor but also a dedicated mentor who took a genuine interest in my growth as a filmmaker. He recognized my passion for the craft and understood the challenges I faced as an international student with limited English proficiency. Despite this, he saw my potential and went the extra mile to ensure I received the necessary guidance and support.

One of the most impactful things Thomas emphasized was the importance of honing my critical thinking skills. He taught me how to analyze and deconstruct films, helping me understand the nuances that make a film successful or not. He encouraged me to form my own opinions and understand that there is no right or wrong when it comes to interpreting art. This mindset has stayed with me throughout my career, allowing me to approach every project with an open mind and embrace diverse perspectives.

During the challenging times of the Covid pandemic, Thomas reached out to me personally to offer words of encouragement. He reminded me that art, including film, has the power to evoke different emotions and connect with people in unique ways. His unwavering belief in the artistic nature of filmmaking instilled in me the confidence to trust my instincts and take creative risks.

Thomas’s dedication to teaching and his genuine care for his students have had a lasting impact on my professional journey. Without his guidance, patience, and belief in my abilities, I would not have achieved the level of success I enjoy today. I am forever grateful for his mentorship and the invaluable lessons he imparted.
