Meet Wenbin Liu | Artist & Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Wenbin Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wenbin, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am always inspired by artists, their practice and response to the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artistic practice delves into the concept of an ‘alien-topia’—a future shaped by unprecedented technological breakthroughs, creating scenarios beyond our current imagination. What sets my work apart is my focus on the cultural and social crises that hint at this unknown future. I explore the shadowy corners of progress, where technology and human values intersect, often in conflict. I try to to outline these complex interactions in a way that is both thought-provoking and accessible.
The journey to this point in my career was filled with challenges. It involved extensive research and a deep understanding of both cultural phenomena and technological trends. Addressing politically sensitive themes required subtlety and insight, often finding indirect yet impactful ways to communicate these issues. It wasn’t easy, but it was a journey that enriched my artistic vision and personal growth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would recommend the various museum and galleries that are showing artworks of different artists. Some I highly recommend is Hammer Museum, MOCA, LA County Museum, Sean Kelly, GAGA&Rena Spauling gallery, Mariam Goodman Gallery which is really new in LA, Regen Project, 1301PE, David Zwirner Galler, Hauser Wirth Gallery, Commonwealth, Council, Spruth Magers Gallery, Lisson Gallery.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think that currently, there are so many crises happening all around the world, which are depressing, disturbing, and sometimes even evoke feelings of desperation. If given this chance, I would like to recognize all the communities who are fighting against injustice, crises in humanity, and ecological issues. This includes every anonymous person working in these communities and organizations, contributing little by little to make the world better. This is not an easy job and often not very rewarding. That is why I think it is necessary to recognize them
