We had the good fortune of connecting with Wenjay Sung and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wenjay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After searching for children’s shoes at Target, Ross, and Marshall’s, I realized there needed to be a better way. I drafted up an idea with my wife and approached several friends who have young children as my resource. Through my web searching, I got an ad for Oneday mentoring and signed up for their one on one mentorship program for entrepreneurs.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a full time physician and married father of 3, I’ve decided to venture into the business world by starting a Children’s shoe brand in Japan. I’m excited because it brings me out of my comfort zone and into another culture that I have deep invested respect. I took a route that provides me with a mentor through Oneday College (UK) and their MBA development program for entrepreneur. Working with my mentor, I’ve been learning and reading a lot and most importantly, I’m targeting customer pain points (Japanese families) prior to investing lots of resources into my venture.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Pasadena, I’d wake my friends up early and take a jog around the Rose Bowl. There’s so many people who take advantage of this space and use it for fitness and health development so it’s like joining a neighborhood block party. Afterward, I’d take them to old town and walk along Colorado Blvd. We’d stop by city hall and its amazing open air architecture and explore some of the history of Pasadena. Eating at Mi Piace for Brunch or waiting in line for Russell’s would be worth it, while dinner would be at Ramen Tatsunoya where every bowl is made to perfection. We’d eventually end up near Lake Ave and explore the shops but if we’re hungry again, I’d take him to in-&-out burger.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
