We had the good fortune of connecting with WiLL Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi WiLL, what do you attribute your success to?
My determination and willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges are essential to my success. I started playing the piano at a young age. I continued to develop my skills by majoring in Chinese flute and participating in international music festivals. However, I did not stop there, as I continued to explore different genres of music by forming a rock band with my friends and eventually discovering my interest in film scoring.

My decision to pursue my dream in the United States despite language and cultural barriers is a testament to my determination to succeed. I recognized that music could break boundaries and decided to rebuild my music style and uniqueness from the beginning, which allowed me to learn diverse ways of music composition.

Moreover, my willingness to explore my creativity and imagination by integrating Chinese and Western music elements and seeking creative inspiration has helped me to stand out in the industry. My music style has evolved from combining Chinese and Western music to multiple genres, including orchestral, traditional Chinese music, hip-hop, K-pop, and video games, which has helped me gain recognition on international platforms such as Netflix, CBS, Disney+, national geographic, Tencent, iQIYI, and Universal Music.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a composer who has traversed diverse musical styles and genres, I am most proud of my ability to create unique music that blends elements from various cultures and eras. I take inspiration from my traditional Chinese music background and exposure to Western music while studying in the United States. This has enabled me to create a distinct style that stands out in the industry.

My music journey to where I am today has not been easy. Moving to the United States to pursue my dream of film scoring was a significant challenge, mainly due to cultural shock and language barriers. However, I tell myself never to give up and focus on learning from the basics and rebuilding my music style from the beginning. I sought to integrate Chinese and Western music elements and explore my creativity and imagination to develop my unique sound.

The lessons I have learned along the way are that success does not come overnight; it takes perseverance, hard work, and dedication to achieve one’s goals. I have also learned that one should not be afraid to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Through my experiences, I have developed a deep appreciation for the power of music to break down cultural barriers and unite people from different backgrounds.

Regarding my story, I want the world to know that my music is a fusion of different cultures and styles. I take pride in my ability to create music that resonates with people emotionally and brings joy to their lives. My story is a testament to the fact that anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, can succeed with hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to learn and adapt.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because I live Downtown, I will start the day with breakfast at The Original Pantry Cafe. This historic diner has been serving customers since 1924. After breakfast, visit the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall and take some photos of its unique architecture and stunning views of the city. Then Walk over to Grand Central Market, a bustling food hall with various vendors offering delicious food and drinks. Take a short walk to the historic Bradbury Building, a stunning example of Victorian architecture featured in many movies and TV shows. Head to Little Tokyo and have lunch at Daikokuya, known for its delicious ramen. End the day with live music at the Blue Whale Jazz Club, a renowned venue in Little Tokyo known for showcasing emerging and established jazz musicians.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister, as well as my beautiful wife and lovely son. I also want to express my gratitude to my mentors, Chung-hsien Wu and Yong-ching Ting, for inspiring me in music and supporting me along the way.
