We had the good fortune of connecting with Xavier Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xavier, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk can be a coin toss that either serves us or teaches us. Both components necessary for growth and evolution. I grew up knowing how to play it safe…by following the prototypical wisdom which would allow me access to a normal life. As a boy, the appeal of normal didn’t begin to lose its luster until I would observe what the grass looked like on the other side of abundance. Of course, normal is subjective. I desired an over-the-top life that I could share with others. Still a kid, I held these desires in my heart but had no idea which road led to that vision—short of robbing a bank or being some celebrity. The only thing that was ever obvious to me was what I wanted. My appetite for risk has always been controversial—usually exemplified during activities that are particularly dangerous or stupid. If people weren’t calling me a nut job, that simply translated to me as not going big enough. In which there lies the golden nugget: never risk what you aren’t willing to lose. Clear boundaries between career risks and relational risks are so important. A lapse in judgement will quickly and painfully open your eyes to what matters most—especially with the understanding that life is short. Replacing a career is much less agonizing, than risking relationships with confidantes. Sacrificing the ego lies in the heart of winning. When you master this, even big risks seem to be marginal because you’ve shaved away from the thickness of the ego. Theoretically speaking, you can always win, with the right perspective. Risk in business requires a level of impartiality and continuous education. These practices are intrinsic to any businessperson particularly when factors like the market for example, are outside of our control. Sustaining self-education, illuminates new opportunities that previously weren’t evident. Certainly, a wise investment of time!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is focused on providing fun, memorable, and unique short-term rentals to guests through platforms like AirBnB and the like. I manage my own properties. I work alongside a small team of housekeepers and general contractors for renovations and maintenance ensuring that guests gloat when they arrive and depart. I’m also a licensed realtor. What I’m most excited about is sharing my passion and expertise to elevate others. I wouldn’t describe my journey to where I am as easy or hard. Instead I would say being creative, figuring things out along the way, and that being clear on what I want and when I wanted my goals has made it very easy to be consistent. The vision is in my head, but working and sacrificing strategically is what happily keeps me in motion. What sets me apart is the consistency in extra care I put into the details and the speed in which I get things done. I’m oddly skilled at negotiating and curtailing that into success–mainly because rejection is simply not acceptable when there is an answer or workaround for most things. As I continue to refine these skills, new opportunities seem to arise. Another endeavor that I’ve taken lead on has been leveraging my relationships with GC’s to renovate commercial spaces for investors. It’s immensely rewarding knowing that I can play a hand in making someone else’s space better, but also by bringing business to the guys that have helped me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a guy that has a consistent schedule at the moment, I’ll dare say that spontaneity is my flavor. The magnitude of that spontaneity depends on the day. Anyone who knows me will tell you that my three dogs and I frequent the popular chain, Kreation. If you fancy matcha pancakes and don’t mind forking over $15 for a 12oz beverage, then this would be an early morning must for anyone hanging with the X-Man. I tend to sway plant-based, so if you want some delicious lunch head over to Sage Plant Based Bistro for a mouthwatering buffalo cauliflower pizza. If you’re like me and fancy having your mind utterly blown, I highly recommend visiting the Botanical gardens in Pasadena or the California Science Center. Following that, it’s up in the air given it holds my attention! A random skydive, day trip to Pioneertown, or perhaps a round of golf. Literally, who knows. The dogs and I enjoy hikes, the beach, and our local dog parks. Personally, night life tends to be an audible.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This Shoutout series is dedicated to God, my family and friends. Somehow my parents managed to create a perfect son, *wink-wink,* instilling in me all I needed to be tenacious in my endeavors. I credit them with incorporating my brothers and I into communities that gave everything for the success of the youth. As adults, my brothers and I, look back with immense gratitude. I will never know the degree of sacrifice my parents dedicated, which enabled us to participate in the activities we enjoyed. Band, sports events, choir, summer camp, tutoring, church events, you name it we did it all. At the forefront of my mind are my comrades I served alongside in the Air Force, teammates I played ball with, high school and college coaches, even people I don’t know yet. I’m very serious about succeeding because I love people and I want to give back to them even more than what they’ve given to me. When I think about the contribution I want to add to their lives as a show of gratitude for simply loving me or offering their time, it allows my drive to stay nuclear. I’m told all the time that I have a drive that is incomprehensible–to me, that’s not the case at all. It’s simply a matter of identifying what matters most and grasping the fleeting reality of time. I’ll be 80 before I know it! Vader, Liyah, and Kylo, my four-legged sith lords, daddy loves you. Lastly and certainly not the least, a very special shoutout to the one and only SJT for all you continue to do in the community.
