We had the good fortune of connecting with Xiangni Song and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xiangni, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
I have a very limited budget for my art career. My family has been a huge source of support, particularly during my school years. Upon graduating, I took on two part-time jobs to become more financially self-sufficient. I split my time between earning an income and working as a freelance artist.
To achieve my goal of becoming an independent artist, I must make wise spending decisions. I minimize expenses by cutting back on entertainment such as buying new games and clothing. Instead of dining at high-end restaurants, ordering takeout, or using Uber, I choose more economical options like eating at lower-priced restaurants, cooking at home, and using public transportation or walking.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, I specialize in creating narrative paintings, drawings, ceramics, and printmaking. With an educational background in illustration, my style is influenced by a diverse range of sources, including novels, folktales, films, and animations. My artwork often reflects personal experiences from my life and combines both observation and imagination to bring the scenes to life.
I am drawn to the use of distorted bodies, personified animals, unusual spaces, and vibrant colors in my work. Each piece I create has a unique story to tell, and I strive to translate these emotions and experiences into my images. I am transparent with my feelings and use my art as a means of storytelling, expressing emotions that may be difficult to put into words.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Last December, I had the pleasure of hosting a group of friends from my hometown of Beijing, China and California. My high school friend and two of her college friends stayed with me for a week in New York. I suggested they check out some of the city’s renowned art museums, including The Met, MOMA, Whitney, and Guggenheim. These museums are a must-see for anyone interested in art.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from several important people in my life. My family has always been there for me, offering advice and comfort when I need it. My BFA and MFA professors have also been incredibly supportive and helpful, providing guidance and encouragement to all their students. Additionally, my friends, bosses, coworkers, and gallery associates have been instrumental in my growth as an artist and a person. Their kind words and valuable suggestions have made a significant impact on my life. Without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am truly thankful for everything they have done for me.
