We had the good fortune of connecting with Ximena Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ximena, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career as a reflection of my personal journey and a commitment to authenticity. Growing up in unique circumstances under the care of my grandparents, I found solace and a means of expression through art from an early age. The profound bond with my grandmother, who instilled values of kindness and warmth, became a significant source of inspiration, motivating me to channel those emotions into my creative pursuits.

Art, for me, serves as a powerful medium to translate feelings and struggles. It allows me to convey the complexities of the human experience, portraying strength in vulnerability and challenging societal norms. Through my creative endeavors, I aim to share a narrative that resonates with others, fostering connection and understanding. The pursuit of an artistic career is not just a profession but a way to authentically express and contribute to the collective human story.

Simultaneously, I co-founded ‘Momos’ with my sister, a Latin food pop-up that launched in September 2023.
‘Momos’ is not just a culinary venture but a heartfelt tribute to our grandparents, Moly and Momo. Their love for food and celebration served as the inspiration behind this flavorful endeavor. Each recipe crafted is a homage to our heritage, carrying forward their legacy and offering a taste of our cultural richness to the world.

In embracing both my artistic calling and my culinary roots, I have found a harmonious balance that brings me immense fulfillment. I like to believe that my journey reflects a continual pursuit of passion and authenticity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
– Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? It has not been a smooth road for me. From the very beginning, learning to speak English at the age of 15 presented a significant challenge. I navigated high school by translating everything from English to Spanish and back again, adding an extra layer of difficulty to my academic journey. Despite the hurdles, I managed to achieve multiple recognitions at school and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, which was no easy feat.

Entering the workforce posed its own set of challenges, particularly in securing a job without facing judgment for being different. Overcoming negativity and navigating an environment where some people attempted to undermine my efforts was a demanding aspect of my journey.

Transitioning into the art world brought yet another layer of complexity, given its highly competitive nature. As an immigrant daring to dream, I still face real challenges in establishing myself and finding my place within the industry.

– Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others.
I am an artist who works across various mediums, with a particular affinity for acrylic painting. My focus lies in portraying women as simultaneously strong and vulnerable, delving into the emotional journey they navigate. I take pride in challenging the societal notion that strength and vulnerability are mutually exclusive.

In each painting, my goal is to depict the strength found in vulnerability. I believe that a woman who embraces both aspects of her nature is mindful of her words and delivers her truth with care.

While conveying the harmonious coexistence of sensitivity and strength, my art serves as a reminder that these qualities contribute to the human journey. Personally, as a strong yet sensitive woman, I use the full spectrum of emotions as stepping stones to grow stronger, emerge resilient, and feel empowered.

– what you are most proud of.
I am most proud of consistently following my heart and staying true to myself, regardless of external opinions or judgments. I prioritize my own values and beliefs, allowing them to guide my actions and decisions, even in the face of societal expectations or criticism.

– What are you excited about
I am genuinely thrilled about what artistic world holds for me. The anticipation of continuing to create artworks that have a positive impact on others and contribute to their lives is a source of great excitement. Moreover, the prospect of personal growth as an artist adds an extra layer of enthusiasm. I can’t wait to witness what life has in store for me on this creative journey – each new opportunity and experience promises to be a canvas waiting to be painted with unique and fulfilling moments.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start the day by taking my best friend to a local gem for breakfast – my favorite place, Home. We’d indulge in their mouth-watering eggs with chorizo, setting the perfect tone for the day. The cozy atmosphere and delicious breakfast would surely make for a great start.

To add a touch of culture and education to our day, we would visit the Museum of Natural History. The museum offers a fascinating journey through the wonders of the natural world, providing a perfect blend of entertainment and knowledge.

For lunch, we would head to Saigon Dish, a spot known for its fantastic Vietnamese cuisine. The perfect choice, especially for a chilly day, would be their comforting and flavorful chicken pho. It’s a delightful culinary experience that captures the essence of Vietnamese cuisine.

After lunch to add a touch of sophistication and art, we would head to the Getty Center. The stunning architecture, impressive art collections, and breathtaking views of Los Angeles make it a must-see destination.

Finally, to cap off the day, we would venture to Radna Silom Market for an authentic Thai street food experience. The highlight would be the Pad Thai – a Thai classic that never disappoints. The vibrant atmosphere of the market, coupled with the explosion of flavors from the street food, would make it a memorable stop.

This itinerary is designed to offer a diverse and enjoyable experience, blending delicious food, cultural exploration, and artistic appreciation for a day that my best friend would cherish forever.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The most important factor behind my success lies in the unwavering support and sacrifices of my family. My parents, who worked tirelessly and made countless sacrifices to provide us with a better life, have been the driving force behind my journey. Their dedication, hard work, and the life they left behind for our sake serve as a constant reminder of the importance of resilience and determination.

The love and sacrifices of my grandparents, who instilled in us the belief that no goal is unattainable, along with the unwavering support of my siblings, have played an essential role in shaping my values and perspective. Their influence has fostered in me a steadfast commitment to love and perseverance, which I carry into every aspect of my life.
Additionally, my husband’s encouragement and constant push to pursue my passion have been instrumental in overcoming challenges and embracing my path. With such a strong support system, I feel empowered to dream big and reach for my goals.
