We had the good fortune of connecting with Xinovia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xinovia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Perth Western Australia and I’ve lived in LA since late 2016. The biggest impact my upbringing has had on me and who I am today is within my personal relationships. Perth is a small nit community and I was brought up to be welcoming and helpful to others around me. This quality in people I think really gets lost in a city like LA where lots of us are struggling to make ends meet, the film industry is so go-go-go all the time, and just due to size of the population here it’s chaotic, so I find everyone quite reluctant to go out of their way for others. Everyones time is so valuable here in LA so I completely understand, but being welcoming and helpful to others is definitely an aspect of myself I try to keep alive from my upbringing as much as possible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self taught musician, producer and DJ. I have been in love with music since I was a teenager and have actively been involved in the music industry in one way or another since that age. I spent my entire 20’s traveling the world and it wasn’t until I settled down here in LA in 2016 where I really decided I wanted to make music my career and life.
This was very daunting, arriving in LA, the mecca of the industry in both film and music, and I had no idea what to do. In the first 2 years I joined a few bands, met some cool people, tried to become a regular DJ around town and do weddings, but nothing really took off very fast. I had to work hard for 3 years and do other jobs on the side to pay rent, I couldn’t find the right people that I connected with in the right way… until now.
I’ve finally found where I belong within the music world and that is Producing. I feel the most comfortable and the most confident in this role. I’m working on a number of collaborations at the moment with some very talented artists, one of which is some what of a musical partner to me, singer-songwriter Aimie Lovett Sommer. We created a producer/song-writer team together and our debut single ‘On Your Side’ was released last month on 8.19.21. We are both very proud of this track and I look forward to working with Aimie again.
My other most passionate venture is playing synth for an extraordinary band based out of Vancouver called ‘Rainbow Road’. I urge everyone to check out their album ‘Want’. It’s like nothing else you’ve heard before.
The biggest lesson I learnt over the past few years was to create music for me, first and foremost. It’s easy to get sucked into the big machine of producing stale repetitive pop music that we’ve all heard before. You lose the soul of the music this way. So once I learnt this making music remains a pure joy and a privilege.
I’ve got a long way to go to be where I want to be as a producer/DJ in this world, but I feel like i’m on the right path now and i’m going to keep moving forward.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Amigo’s Mexican Restaurant in Burbank for sure (it’s my local and my 100% fav joint for good mexican food and killer margaritas). We’d jump on the train to downtown and hit the arts district and do a little pub crawl, then walk up to Grand Central Markets for feed. From there we’d walk to a place called Mezcalero which has the best cocktails you’ve ever had.
We do a hike one day in Griffith Park.
And 100% take them to a Dodgers Game.
Drive up the coast to Santa Barbara for the day and maybe hit some wineries on the way back.
And finally we go see a show at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood which is my fav live music venue.
A couple of home cooked chilled nights thrown in there too for recuperation.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Allison Calleri, Owner/Producer at MikkoMia Productions.
