We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasmine Wahab and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yasmine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Starting a business for me has always been about using my passion for offering fantastic service and experiences that brings joy to others and in return, I get to do what I love and be my own boss. During the pandemic, I started a food blog, WhisknWhip for fun to share some of my personal and family favorite recipes without any idea as to where it would lead me. It quickly filled my life with so much joy and inspiration and over time, I started to see my recipes touch people’s lives and end up on their dinner tables. I slowly started to sell my popular banana bread at food pop-ups with others in the food community as a side hustle. It made me think that there is a real opportunity for me to start my own business, so I dedicated myself to saving, planning, using every waking minute in between work hours and funds from my job to put towards my dream. I ended up launching The Seed on Nov 5th, 2021 with so much pride and the support was just overwhelming. Every order felt like a sign that I was on the right path. Three and half months after the launch, I decided to take the leap to leave my 14-year corporate career working in the events and marketing industry at top movie studios and tech companies behind, to follow my passion for high-quality food and plant “the seed” and grow my own business. It has been the biggest risk I’ve taken but also the most fulfilling yet.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

The Seed is a wedding and event catering company based in Van Nuys, CA, covering the Los Angeles and Orange County regions. Specializing in gourmet and locally sourced appetizer and dessert boards and grazing tables to serve at all types of events. We offer everything from cheese & charcuterie, farm fresh crudités, bagel board, seasonal fruit board, cookie boards and so much more allowing you to mix and match your favorites for a relaxed dining experience.

Our values are integrated into everything that we do at The Seed, which is why I am proud to say we support local farms (aka my happy place), small businesses as well as providing you with the best seasonal ingredients displayed beautifully on each board, all while doing good for the planet with our eco-friendly and recyclable packaging.

I am proud to be living our company mission with every order. When I launched The Seed, my mission was to bring people together over a delicious array of high-quality food. I wanted to create gorgeous centerpieces that people would gather around, have enlightened conversations, belly laughs and make memories that would last for years. Being in isolation due to COVID, and away from friends and family for so long, I wanted to bring people back together (safely of course) to regain that human connection. Now when we deliver to a wedding, baby shower, girls’ night, corporate event or as a simple thank-you gift, we know people will gather around these boards to do just that. It is such a simple mission but knowing that our boards create memories is the reason why we do what we do!

I am also proud of the partnerships we’ve done with local businesses such as French Florist, Crumbles Patisserie and Arnett Farms over the last 8 months for special Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo promotions. Our boards are now also offered as part of Bliss Beach packages at the Will Rogers State Beach location.  More partnerships are currently in the works.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I am a foodie so I would immediately take them to some of the best food spots this city has to offer. My personal favorite and non-fancy spot is Leo’s taco truck because you can’t be in LA without enjoying some amazing non-pretentious Mexican food. We would also hit up, Bestia or Antico for an incredible Italian feast, Bavel for a contemporary middle eastern meal and off course coffee and pastry from either Proof Bakery in Atwater Village or flaky croissants from Tartine. Drinks at Only the Wild Ones in Venice or Augustine Wine Bar in Sherman Oaks – their wine selection is one of my favorites. Shopping at Century City Mall or on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Concert at the Hollywood Bowl is a must and a movie screening on the lawn the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with one of our grazing boards.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My dream has always been to have my own company and work on building something from the ground up rooted in love, passion and gratitude. Oprah has been a big inspiration of mine from a very young age. Watching her show growing up made me believe that I could do anything. Her quote – “do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do” has always stuck with me. I knew that by starting by own business, I needed to get myself to a stable place financially to give myself a leg up.

Others in the foodie community that have truly inspired me are The Bad Jew and Heavy Handed who have really built a brand during the pandemic and have taken a risk to do what they truly love.

Books that have helped me on my entrepreneurial journey are “Dare to Lead” by Brené Brown, “Work Party” by Jaclyn Johnson and “Untamed” by Glennon Doyle. These fearless ladies have showed me how to pave a path for myself by fearlessly going after my dreams and navigating the ups and downs.

Lastly but certainly not least, my family and friends for their continued support of my business and dreams.
