Meet Yasong Wang | UX/UI Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasong Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yasong, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I would like to clarify that my pursuit isn’t solely centered around being artistic. As a UX/UI designer, I see myself more as a creative thinker and problem solver. While artistry may involve infusing ideas, expressing emotions, and embodying personal spirit within artistic works, being a designer entails catering to everyone. Though both processes involve creativity, a UX/UI designer must also adhere to certain design principles and consider implementation. For me, the most rewarding aspect is the process of problem-solving and designing experiences for a wide range of users. I particularly enjoy the discovery phase, where user research helps uncover user needs. Additionally, witnessing users use the products I design brings me a sense of fulfillment, which is what I ultimately strive for.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my career journey, transitioning from a visual designer to a UX/UI role has been a significant learning curve. Initially, my focus was primarily on the presentation layer, crafting visually appealing user interfaces. However, as I delved deeper into this field, I came to realize that understanding the pain points behind users’ needs is paramount.
One pivotal experience that shaped my perspective was my first job at an online travel agency in China, which was once part of the Expedia group. My responsibility was to design the core hotel booking process through the WeChat platform. During this time, I learned firsthand that the success of a product hinges on its ability to solve users’ problems effectively. Moreover, striking a balance between fulfilling business objectives and delivering a seamless user experience is crucial. Operating within the WeChat platform, with its colossal user base, posed unique challenges. Designing a product for over 100 million users meant that every alteration had a profound impact on user interaction and order data. Consequently, we meticulously conducted A/B tests for even the smallest changes to ensure that each decision positively impacted both users and business metrics. These experiences served as a cornerstone for my understanding of user-centric design and the intricate interplay between user needs and business goals.
My recent project, AI AD Manager, has recently been honored with the prestigious iF Designer Award 2024. Our goal with AI AD Manager is to address the pain points of advertisers and provide them with a solution that not only streamlines their workflow but also enhances their overall effectiveness. By harnessing the power of AI, we’ve been able to significantly improve the efficiency of ad campaigns, making them more targeted, personalized, and ultimately more successful.
In my role as the lead UX/UI designer for AI AD Manager, I’ve immersed myself in understanding the intricate needs and challenges faced by advertisers. It’s not just about designing sleek interfaces; it’s about delving deep into the daily operations of advertisers to unearth their pain points. By empathizing with their struggles and gaining insights from their perspective, we’ve been able to craft solutions that resonate deeply with their needs and aspirations.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For the best time ever with my best friend visiting the area, I’d take them to explore museums. From Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts to iconic institutions like MoMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, we’d delve into art, history, and culture. Historical museums provide inspiration and reflection, offering valuable insights for our journey forward.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! This year has been incredibly rewarding, with recognition from numerous prestigious design awards, including the IF Design Award, Muse Design Award, UX Design Awards, IDA Design Award, French Design Award, Indigo Design Award, and New York Design Award, among others.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my mom, whose unwavering support and encouragement have empowered me to explore and pursue my passions in the field I love. Her belief in me has been a driving force behind my journey to where I am today.
Furthermore, I want to extend credit and recognition to my exceptional design team, Hong Qiu and Wei Wang. Their extraordinary talent, unwavering dedication, and collaborative spirit have been instrumental in our collective success. Together, we’ve navigated challenges, pushed creative boundaries, and achieved remarkable results. Their contributions are invaluable, and I am truly grateful to have them by my side.
