We had the good fortune of connecting with Yimeng Sun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yimeng, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Yes, definitely. Before college, I found myself questioning whether art could provide the financial stability, reputation, and respect I desired. Despite doubts, I chose to persist, driven by my passion for creativity and a belief in its potential. It was a decision rooted in trust, knowing opportunities would unfold by staying true to my passion. Fortunately, I found an art-related job that allowed me to sustain myself while continuing to pursue both my interests and career. Looking back, I realize that even if I hadn’t pursued art academically, it would have remained a significant part of my life, serving as a constant source of interest and inspiration.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a motion designer in the advertising industry, my expertise lies in 2D graphics. One of my proudest achievements is seeing my work displayed in various real-world settings. Working in advertising ensures that my creations are showcased on TV, YouTube, billboards, and other media platforms, allowing me to merge my passion with my profession and sustain myself financially.

Starting in this industry can be challenging, especially without prior experience, leading to feelings of uncertainty. However, over time, I’ve gained confidence and insight into meeting client needs and understanding my capabilities.

Ultimately, my goal is to let people recognize my potential for combining commercial and artistic elements in branding. I aim to use my artistic knowledge to effectively convey messages and contribute to meaningful communication through my work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I highly recommend Universal Studios, especially if you enjoy roller coasters. While the coasters may not be as extreme as some, they offer a unique experience by incorporating screens into the ride, providing an immersive and enjoyable experience.

And don’t forget to check out the beach! Enjoy the fantastic weather, breeze, and beautiful sunsets.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to all the incredible individuals who have supported me along the way. First and foremost, I’m grateful for my company, The Mill, for providing me with the opportunity to grow and thrive in my career. A special thanks to my supervisor, Patrick, for his guidance and mentorship. And of course, to my wonderful colleagues, whose collaboration and camaraderie have been invaluable. Working at one of the best production companies has been a privilege, and I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished together. I look forward to continuing to contribute and make a difference in our industry.
