We had the good fortune of connecting with Yizhou Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yizhou, why did you pursue a creative career?
Absolutely! I’m a digital product designer at Yahoo, and the choice to pursue an artistic and creative career was driven by a combination of deep-seated passions and personal motivations.

First off, I’ve always had this intense desire to express myself in visually captivating ways. There’s something about taking thoughts, ideas, and concepts and turning them into tangible designs that truly resonates with me. The ability to create something beautiful or impactful is a driving force that keeps me engaged and excited about what I do.

Problem-solving is a part of my DNA, and I find immense satisfaction in tackling design challenges head-on. Whether it’s finding the most intuitive user experience for a digital platform or creating a logo that perfectly encapsulates a brand’s essence, I thrive on the process of discovering innovative solutions that elevate a design to its fullest potential.

The idea of making an impact through my creative work is incredibly motivating. As a designer, I have the power to shape how people perceive brands, how they navigate digital spaces, and how they connect with products. It’s this ability to influence and create a lasting impression that truly inspires me to pour my creativity into everything I do.

Constant growth and learning are essential to me. Creative careers are ever-evolving, with new tools, techniques, and trends emerging all the time. I love the challenge of staying up-to-date and pushing my boundaries, ensuring that my designs remain fresh and relevant in a rapidly changing landscape.

Variety is the spice of life, and creative careers like mine offer an abundance of it. One day, I might be crafting an elegant website interface, and the next, I could be working on a packaging design that’s both functional and visually stunning. This diversity keeps me engaged and excited about the different directions my work can take.

Collaboration fuels my creativity and amplifies my ideas. Working alongside clients, colleagues, and fellow creatives provides a wealth of perspectives and insights that enrich my work. The sense of shared vision and collective growth is truly rewarding and keeps my creative energy flowing.

Finally, the power of visual communication is a force that I hold close to my heart. The ability to distill complex ideas into visuals that resonate instantly with people is a remarkable skill. Through my designs, I can bridge gaps, evoke emotions, and create connections that go beyond words.

So, my pursuit of an artistic and creative career as a digital product designer is driven by my passion for crafting impactful visuals, solving design challenges, leaving a lasting influence, embracing continuous growth, cherishing variety, collaborating effectively, and communicating powerfully through the language of design. It’s a journey that allows me to make a difference while fully enjoying what I love to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I kept finding myself in paradoxes from a young age. Like I played saxophone from an early time but my playlist was occupied by electronic music. Also I dreamt of being an astronomer, but ended up becoming a product designer.

As I entered the tech industry, paradoxes haunt me still. I love new technologies as they can be the sharpest knife to kill boredom and limitations, but I also hate how they swallow our life. However, I found that when using my creativity to design, to create, to imagine, my world seems to achieve a subtle balance in such a dangerous but charming paradox. So I choose to engage myself more in the creative fields and bring pioneering tech to people’s life with innovative products.

Yahoo is a renowned global media and technology company with a wide-reaching impact, connecting nearly a billion individuals worldwide to their passions. Our diverse range of trusted products, content, and brands, including Yahoo, AOL, and TechCrunch, span across various domains, from finance and commerce to gaming and news.

As a design lead for Yahoo Finance mobile apps, I am focused on spearheading the development of Yahoo Finance apps, as well as creating innovative features for our finance community. My goal is to empower individuals to make smarter investment decisions by providing them with user-friendly, intuitive, and engaging experiences.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out to Kenya Hara. He is my all-time inspiration. His philosophy of “emptiness” has not only inspired my design work but has also provided me with guidance in life.
