We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuantian Ding and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yuantian, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
What brings me the greatest joy as a singer-songwriter is the moment I step onto the stage to perform my original songs. In that instant, all eyes are on me, and I feel the audience’s focus on the music I’ve crafted. Some of my songs provide comfort and healing, offering strength to those in need, while others are lively and vibrant, sparking joyful memories for the listeners. Regardless of the emotion at play, the ability to forge a deeper connection with my audience through music and share positive energy is what truly fills me with happiness. I’m also incredibly thankful that audiences choose to invest their time and emotions in resonating with my work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art, at its heart, is about emotional translation. I’m someone who doesn’t speak a great deal in daily life, yet has a rich inner world full of feelings and thoughts waiting to be expressed. Music became my chosen language—a bridge between those unspoken depths and the shared understanding of melody and lyric. What sets me apart, I believe, is a focus on honest intimacy. In a world that can feel loud and fast, I try to create spaces within songs—spaces for reflection, for healing, for quiet celebration. I’m less interested in grand pronouncements and more in capturing the specific texture of a moment: the fragile hope after a loss, the quiet understanding between old friends, the bittersweet romance of watching a sunset.
What I’m most proud and excited about is the community that has formed around this intention. It’s not just about streaming numbers, but about the handwritten letters, and the DMs after a show where someone says, “I felt seen.” Knowing my music has become a part of people’s personal histories—their soundtracks for love, grief, and resilience—is the greatest achievement I can imagine. Currently, I’m exploring a variety of musical styles and experimenting with writing lyrics in both English and Mandarin. Creating these dual-language versions enables me to reach and connect with a broader audience, allowing more people to hear and understand my story. In the process, I’ve fallen in love with the unique beauty and expressive power of each language. A major milestone in this journey was my recent solo concert, “Beyond Faces.” The title reflects the idea that each of us is multifaceted and complex, and every part of us deserves to be seen. For the show, I performed 24 of my original songs—half in English, and half in Mandarin—curated from a decade of songwriting, from my very first, raw attempts to what some might call my “signature” works. Each song is a piece of me, marking my growth along this path. The core message I hoped to share that night was this: “Growth isn’t about becoming a better person; it’s about finally learning to accept every part of yourself.”
My journey here was a path of quiet determination. It began at 13 in my bedroom, strumming a guitar and humming my first heartfelt, unpolished song. The dream led me to Berklee College of Music in 2019, where I officially began my formal training. I struggled with deciding whether to focus on being a performer or working behind the scenes, and ultimately chose to major in Contemporary Music Writing and Production. When the pandemic hit, I took online classes for a while. My desire to keep singing led me to apply for a double major in Performance. Still wanting to deepen my craft, I pursued a Master’s in Songwriting at BerkleeNYC. Looking back, while there were small detours and moments of rejection or self-doubt, I’ve been fortunate to walk a path that consistently aligned with my passions. The challenges weren’t roadblocks, but rather signposts that helped me clarify what I truly wanted.
If there’s one thing I want the world to know about my story and my brand, it’s this: I am here for the human moments. My brand isn’t built on a flashy persona or a single hit; it’s built on a promise of consistent, emotional authenticity. I want my music to be a companion—a source of comfort that says, “You’re not alone in what you feel,” and a spark of energy that whispers, “Keep going.” Ultimately, my story is about demonstrating that gentle, heartfelt art possesses immense power. It’s about building a career not above an audience, but with them, one genuine connection at a time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting New York, I’d want to show them the city the way I love it—a mix of iconic sights and laid-back local moments. We’d walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, wander the High Line, and lose track of time at the Met. For sunset, maybe the Roosevelt Island Tram or a rooftop bar in Manhattan. And of course, we’d eat Thai food every chance we got—from the creative comfort of Thai Diner in Nolita to the vibrant flavors of Soothr in the East Village, the homestyle cooking at Thep Thai in Astoria, and the cozy authenticity of Pure Thai Cookhouse in Hell’s Kitchen. On a lazy weekend, we’d browse the Brooklyn Flea, catch some live jazz in a low-key bar, and just soak in the energy of a city that’s both breathtakingly grand and quietly intimate in its own hidden corners.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to two irreplaceable sources of strength in my life: my family and every listener who has ever shared a piece of their story with me.
My family has been my unwavering foundation since the very beginning. Choosing music as a career path comes with its unique set of challenges and uncertainties, but through it all, their unconditional support, encouragement, and belief in me never faltered. Their love and patience have not only carried me through difficult times but have also become a profound source of inspiration in my songwriting.
At the same time, I want to recognize every listener who has allowed my music into their lives. As a singer-songwriter, I create in solitude, but the songs only truly come alive when they resonate with someone else. Whether it’s a message about how a lyric comforted them, or knowing a song was part of their wedding day, or a quiet moment of healing—these connections transform my work from mere notes and words into a shared human experience. That silent dialogue between the stage and the heart is why I do what I do.
So, to my family who gave me the courage to begin this journey, and to the listeners who give it meaning—thank you. This story wouldn’t be the same without you.
