We had the good fortune of connecting with Yue Xu and Julie Krafchick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yue Xu and Julie Krafchick, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
We both work day jobs in addition to running our podcast. Work life balance is a little tricky when you’re using your leisure time to work on your passion project. In recent years, we’ve learned to draw a line between work and life when we meet. Before, all of our time together would be focused on the podcast, which burnt us out and put our friendship on the back burner. Now we make it a point to devote the beginning of our meetings to life “stuff,” so we can connect as friends first, and then dive into the business side of things.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When we started our dating podcast 5 years ago, we thought we would just tell funny dating stories and call it a day. Little did we know that our show would eventually dive deep so into the modern dating culture that it would inspires daters (including ourselves) to change the way they date! We are so proud of creating a platform for diverse voices to tell their stories, share their experiences and expertise, and to learn from one another. We’ve consistently been featured as one of the top podcasts for daters to “not feel alone,” to “date better,” and to “enjoy dating again” (NY Times, CNN, Huffington Post). The evolution of Dateable has not been easy but because we both stayed opened minded and curious, regardless of the hardships of making a podcast a business, we continued with the mindset of learning. Hey, even if we make no money at the end of the day, we’ve learned so much that you cannot put a dollar amount to.

The Dateable Podcast is all about harnessing the power of experiences, community, and stories to empower humans to have better human relationships. It spans all generations, relationship status, and cultures. We would love to explore other platforms to tell these stories whether it’d be a scripted audio series, or a TV adaptation!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s do a jam packed day!

Start with some amazing coffee and brunch at the Destroyer
Do the Culver City stairs
Head to Echo Park Lake and take a nap
Grab a late lunch at Pine and Crane
Go people watching at The Platform and grab a Boba Guys while you’re at it
Dinner and drinks at Cassia

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our friend and Events Producer, Louise Wo! Louise is an amazing events producer by trade but also a fellow podcaster! Her show The Recess Life explores lifelong play and creativity and how we can create a world with more joy. Louise is the one who inspired us to create a community around our podcast and to hold virtual events during Covid. Not only has Louise helped us build a robust and engaged community, she has also up-leveled our production value! We couldn’t have done it without her.
