Meet Yuji Huang | Visual Effects Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuji Huang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yuji, why did you pursue a creative career?
I aspire to be a Visual Effects artist because this job is like performing magic for the world. We are able to create highly believable shots that are able to trick audiences’ eyes yet bring a fascinating viewing experience to them. One day, I hope to be able to incorporate my artistic ideas into feature films for the world to see. On the other hand, the production process always requires a group of people that has huge amounts of dedication, time, and creativity. Through teamwork and active communication, I can get many interesting ideas that I have never thought about, and most of them help me grow both in terms of skills and as a person. That is why I also love taking constructive criticism for my work so that I can learn and improve. I always wish that I could be with a group of amazing artists to create awesome works together.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am personally proud of my learning efficiency. I am a fast learner and capable of observing many details that allow me to acquire a new skill or technique. Surprisingly, this has been a smooth journey for me. Throughout my journey into the industry, there were several obstacles, but these problems were very soon resolved because of the amount of time and passion I put into learning. Along the way, I was very lucky to meet awesome instructors and artist friends who gave me a lot of support. I always believe in the fact that effort always pays off, and one should not just always work hard, but work smart. I thoroughly drafted out my long-term goals and made a few short-term ones that eventually led me to where I wanted to be. I was able to see what I was working towards, which gave me the strength and motivation to keep going forward. When things didn’t work, I was also able to quickly research and look for guidance from more experienced people who could help me clear my doubts.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The huge amount of museums in New York City is definitely the best option for me to show my friends around. NYC has a surprisingly enormous collection of artworks, both within big and small museums. I personally love the Moma because I like to comprehend the message behind modern abstract art. Besides the museum, art fairs are also good places to visit. At art fairs, we can see more local artists’ art, which sometimes reflects their connection to the city and the world. Unlike art in museums, their art is more likely to relate to me personally. If given the chance, I would love to show my friend what is art in NYC like.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out to my college, the School of Visual Arts in New York; being enrolled in the Computer Arts program brought me into the industry. There, I met a lot of friends who share the same passion, as well as professors who help us pursue our dreams. My journey was never lonely thanks to the constructive environment brought about by the school. It is also the perfect place to build my personal network, as we all learn and grow together. Not only did I meet amazing artists within my own department, but also many from other majors such as illustration and design.
