Meet Yummi Liu | Costume Designer, Fashion Designer, & Master Tailor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yummi Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yummi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think there are so many important factors that go into making a brand successful as the main decision-maker of the brand, such as working hard, being flexible with your schedule, time management, and problem-solving. But most importantly, I think it is crucial to know your end goal while trying to enjoy what you do. I love designing and creating with almost any medium. I enjoy the challenges that I am given. Enjoying the process really pushes me to put a little more heart into my designs.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. When I was little, growing up in China, I loved painting, drawing, and sculpting. I’ve always enjoyed exploring new mediums to create beautiful things. I live for beauty and art, I love beautiful things in every form. As I got older and began studying in America, it felt like an explosion of art for me, discovering new cultures and exploring endless inspiration online. I love movies, fashion, paintings, theater, and watching beautiful sunsets at the beach. From studio art and runway to performance art and nature, these things fill me with joy and appreciation for the world. Eventually, I realized that fashion and costume design in L.A. bring together everything I love most. Being hands-on has helped me a lot in studying garment construction, and problem-solving skills have really supported my success. But most importantly, I just love life and everything it shows me. I’m having so much fun creating and continuing to learn about art and this industry.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit L.A., it would have to be at least a two-day trip — one day for the east side and one for the west side. On the first day, we’d start the morning walking around Los Feliz and grab a pastry from the Los Feliz Café. For lunch, we’d go to Little Dom’s, then spend the afternoon exploring Barnsdall Art Park. We’d have an early dinner at Bar Seco in Silver Lake and end the night with a drink at Bar Stella.
The next day would be all about the west side. We’d start by walking along the Santa Monica Boardwalk, then drive through Topanga Canyon. For lunch, we’d pick up something healthy and enjoy it on the beach. We’d spend the whole afternoon in Malibu, hopefully spotting some dolphins or seals, and stay to watch the sunset before heading home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my schoolmate, who introduced me to my first job on set with Jessica Amber. I respect her work ethic so much. The journey of costume design in Hollywood, for me, is so much about building good relationships with people because every job is introduced by someone you’ve met. I am super grateful for Humberto Leon, who has great creative vision and trusted me to create some looks for Katseye. Lastly, my best friend on set, Kelly Page, who puts her trust in me to design and do what I do best.
