We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuxing Lei and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yuxing, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
One of my greatest influences is Hayao Miyazaki. His films, filled with magic and love, beautifully merge imagination with nature. Miyazaki’s ability to create worlds that inspire and unite resonates deeply with me. I aspire to create stories that evoke similar feelings and foster a sense of connection among audiences.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My unique blend of bilingual and bicultural experiences sets me apart. I was raised in the East, influenced by lots of Asian artistry, and later studied filmmaking within the Hollywood system. This fusion of cultural perspectives enables me to approach storytelling with a diverse and innovative lens, offering fresh and unique ideas to the creative landscape. One of the films I worked on last summer has been selected for the First International Film Festival in Beijing. I’m very excited to show people the movie.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite restaurants in San Gabriel is called Nice to Meet You. They specialize in hot pot skewers, a beloved dish from Chengdu, the city where I grew up. At this restaurant, you can select your preferred soup base and then choose from a variety of skewers, including meats, vegetables, and more, to cook in the broth. The ambiance is charmingly vintage, adding to the overall experience.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My directors at ASU News were incredibly inspiring. While working in the media relations department of one of the largest American universities during my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to learn from two Emmy-winning creators. One director taught me how to use tools for managing tasks and logistics effectively, while the other encouraged me to explore the deeper, more artistic aspects of creativity. Both played a crucial role in my development, providing me with the space to grow at a young age and helping to build the foundational habits for my career. I am incredibly fortunate to have had their guidance in shaping my professional journey.
