We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Benson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zach, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve been constantly creating/performing music since I was about 13 years old. At this point, having to stop would feel like cutting off an arm. It almost feels necessary to create for me — I can’t think of a world where I’m not making music in some capacity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been performing and making music since I was in middle school. Between school plays, pop punk bands, acoustic open mic nights, and anywhere else they’d let me perform, I’ve felt comfortable on stages almost all my life. Once I got to college, I pushed it to the side to focus on school and making friends.

I quickly realized how much I needed music again.

I taught myself music production during my sophomore year of college and began writing songs that reflected my experience as a queer person. Slowly, I started putting music up online and performing around town. Over the course of the next few years, I kept writing and performing and started to take myself more seriously as an artist. I moved around a lot. I met a lot of new friends in the queer pop music scene online. My main goal is to provide a safe space for fellow queer kids & sensitive souls to dance and feel like they can be their most authentic selves.

I’ve also been able to start producing music for fellow indie musicians in the scene. I love being able to translate ideas into full blown tracks, and to collaborate with insanely talented humans all across the world.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents have been supporting my music career since I was in middle school — driving me to gigs, investing in gear, always listening to my songs and providing feedback. I wouldn’t be where I am without their love.
