We had the good fortune of connecting with Zachary Hollis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zachary, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor behind my success finding comfort in the process as a whole. I think another big factor has been my ability to try to learn something from every experience I go through, negative or positive. I think sitting with your emotions then constructing a meaning from the experience I can learn from has been a skill I’ve been trying to only get better at.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey to this point I would say has been anything but linear. After I graduated undergrad in 2016, I spent the next 5 years oscillating from playing professional basketball, entering the acting field, and start grad school for clinical psychology. The route which has guided me has been anything but easy, it has constantly pushed me out my comfort zone to where I wasn’t sure if I would be able to continue the journey. Taking the jump to acting and pursuing psychology were not routes I ever envisioned growing up but I am happy I had enough confidence in myself to try. I was able to overcome these challenges of entering new fields I think by being open and curious to the whole experience. Doing my best to limit preconceived notions of any field or how I would end up and just immersing myself in the work. I think if it’s one thing an individual can learn from my story is that it is possible to pursue and find happiness without it being at the expense of others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being born and raised in Los Angeles I can think of plenty of places and adventures. I’m a big beach person so being by the later would definitely be apart of the itinerary. I really enjoy walking Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey, and Playa Del Rey. I also really enjoy going to the Farmer’s Market by The Grove, going there and to the movies on the weekend was something I always enjoyed growing up. Some of the best food spots I’ve been to in LA is : Anzu Japanese Gourmet in Sawtelle, Badmaash off of Fairfax, Cafe Vida in Culver City, and the Serving Spoon in Inglewood.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family, parents in particular. Dr. Lori Teves, a professor of mine while I was at Antioch University. My supervisors who have help me continue to grow my confidence as a therapist. My psychoanalyst who I have been working with for over the past 6 months. The list can be very much longer but these individuals have inspired me in ways I can only repay by maximizing my potential.
