We had the good fortune of connecting with Zara Haines and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zara, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
Following a dream. It’s a simple as that. Figuring out what you love in my case as a singer/songwriter and artist is something everyone should strive to do. I was lucky enough to figure it out and have the support to pursue it. You never want to be too scared you don’t give your dream a go because if you never give it a go, you never give yourself the chance to succeed in the first place.
At many time in my career so far, I’ve considered taking a more simple path, get a 9 to 5 job, something with stability, but it would be something I don’t enjoy. In doing that, I don’t think it would be more simple. So they have the most difficult decision I’ve ever made was giving myself a chance to follow my dream as an artist, which I’m so lucky to have figured out at a young age. So whether I become the next big thing or have a few people list my songs and feel like they’ve not alone I think I made the right decision no matter how hard it was.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes down to it, I’m a singer/singer-writer who writes songs instead of in a diary, so my music is intertwined into my life and how I feel in each moment, with a bit of creative storytelling in between! The music I make is pop with a touch of Alternative and Rock thrown in! My sound and writing style continues to change as I learn more and get older. Learning lessons like your next opportunity might be right round the corner so don’t wait for it to come to you, go find yourself! I am lucky to have been compared to artists that I admire such as Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter, Halsey, and even Taylor Swift. However, I have my own unique take on pop music, and the sound I want to create, striving to make the genre my own. Helping find a new sounds differing from other pop artist’s to feel fresh but still familiar.
I have been writing music since I was young, so these words were only ever meant for my eyes but have opened doors, leading to the chance of making it an every day job. So getting opportunity’s to work with well known producers like sb90 and New Haven I was overjoyed. In saying all this, it is not always easy. Music is subjective so having to hear difficult feedback on work so personal and close to my heart can be challenging, but this has not only taught resilience, but help grow the writing and production of each new song, striving to make each one better than the next.
I’ve now released four singles; petals, insurance policy, The Blonde, and most recently 6 Figure Trigger and on releasing the more soon.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Brisbane is an amazing up and coming city, it has some of the best restaurants in the country! For a Weekend here I would start by staying in the Callie Hotel in James Street! I’m not a breakfast girl so would suggest sitting at Lobby bar just below the hotel, and enjoy some people watching while drinking a coffee. After walking around and doing a little shopping, I would stop by Same Same or Bianca for a long lunch with some friends drinking cocktails, eating amazing food, and having great conversation. As the night progressed I might feel compelled to go down the Howard Smith Wharves, and stop in at a bar like Mr Percival’s right by the river to enjoy the beautiful weather we get here. Then if dinner is on the cards, my go to would be Stanley, for some amazing Chinese food! Then you may find me bar hopping with my friends for the rest of the night!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe all my success thus far to my family and friends who have supported and believed in me… even more than I did at times! The music industry is a very fickle one and is based on individuals, opinions and perceptions of what is good. I was lucky to have fans in these people from day one, cheering me on at every step! My mum in particular is the one that constantly keeps me going and on track; whether I have writers block or get distracted or even question my career path. She always reminds me in this industry and in life that it’s so easy to find all the negatives in any given situation and it’s important to go through all of the win’s I have had so far. I also owe credit to the Cartel Management team, who have guided me through so many different parts of the constantly changing music industry!
