Meet Zedra Slaton | Trap Babies Designer & Street Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Zedra Slaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zedra, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want to be remembered as a creative soul, a hard worker, the girl who’s in tune with her childhood! The girl who’s energy is impeccable that when you see me all you can do is smile and get excited to be in my presence ! I want my legacy to be that I cared about myself , my friends and family, the people around me and just those whom I interact with on a daily basis.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Not only do I do art but I have a clothing line called Trap Babies that I do with my cousin. I get a lot of inspiration from the 90’s when I design. Influenced by Karl Kani, Tommy Hilfiger, Fubu and much more.
I can say that my art is different from others because I add Monopoly money in the background and I actually incorporate toys, records, candy, etc! It’s been done before but not done the way that I’m doing it! Anything that reminds me of the 80’s and 90’s I incorporate it into my paintings because I’m still in tune with my childhood and that’s what separates me from other artist.
I’m most excited for this new art path that I’m taking because I’ve been taking it more serious and more people have been engaging and inquiring on my recents work! I’ve gotten to where I today professionally by staying in my own lane. I was struggling with trying to find my own style that I started to piggy back off of other artist! I had artist block, it was not easy trying to create my own style when everyday I saw other artist making artwork similar to what I wanted to create. I had to really dig outside the box to create a new style of art that was not similar to what you would usually see everyday. I just Had to remember that there can only be one me! What would I want to be remember by. A copycat or a creative mind!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting the area I would love to take them to eat at 208 Rodeo. They are playing live music Friday thru Sunday! Would love to take them to all the art museums like LACMA and The Board and also would love to hang out at the beach and Sunken City in San Pedro. Last we can’t forget about grabbing a burger and fries at my favorite place in the world, In N Out!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents most definitely deserves all the credit in the world and recognition in my story! They had me when they were 15 years old. I’ve watched my dad hustle in the streets and I watched my mom work crazy hours. In the mist of it all with their busy schedules they still made time to take me to all my basketball practices and show up to every single one of my basketball games and help me with my school work. They sacrificed a lot for me growing up and making sure I had the best education was top priority! Just sitting here thinking about it is putting a big smile on my face. Just to know I’ve had supportive parents throughout my life was a blessing. I didn’t have every pair of Jordans that came out. I didn’t have all the new latest streetwear that hit the malls either, but what I did have was a loving mother and crazy loving father! With that being said I can’t thank God enough for that.
