We had the good fortune of connecting with Zina Hamilton-Furbush and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For many decades I dreamed of owning my own business. Actually, during my teenage years, I witnessed my father go to a job he hated, just to pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads. My father worked two jobs and my mother was a stay at home mom who volunteered at our local church. My father chose to stay at a job for 35 years that he hated he never thought he had a choice to leave because he “had responsibilities” that kept him from quitting. He suffered two heart attacks and cancer from the stress and died before he was 60 years old. After my father’s second heart attack, I decided I would have a job that I truly loved and get paid lots of money for it! As a teenager I had no clue what that “job” would be, only that it would be in service to others. I was pretty good at customer service and helping people resolve issues. I was even better at discovering holes in a process and developing a solution to solve the bottleneck or the problem and I was paid very well to do so. I have always wanted to somehow turn this talent of mine into a personal growth and skill development business in particular reaching out to GS12-GS14 BIPOC government employees; developing a comprehensive private coaching program focused on actionable strategies for effective communication within the federal government, tailored specifically for BIPOC managers aspiring to enhance their leadership presence. Also coaching clients to create a leadership roadmap to SES that combines personal development with practical exercises in decision-making, ethical leadership, and navigation of federal policies and Senior Executive Service (SES)/Senior Intelligence Service (SIS) requirements.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I draw from a well of knowledge as a Certified Executive Coach, enriched by my Georgetown University experience, to empower BIPOC professionals aiming for the apex of federal service. My coaching transcends traditional methodologies, focusing on a mindset shift that paves the way for effective leadership and standout personal and professional presence in the SES and SIS echelons.
My approach is tailored to embolden BIPOC professionals who are keen to elevate their trailblazer skills, ensuring their uniqueness shines through in the competitive landscape of federal leadership roles on a pathway to SES/SIS.
With over 15 years of experience in the US Federal Government, I’ve honed my skills in project management and systems integration, all of which contribute to my holistic approach to helping individuals. My coaching is rooted in the belief that a balanced life fuels sustained professional success.
My online course:
Federal Leadership Launchpad asks the question: Are you ready to elevate your federal career to the senior executive ranks? And gives a mission challenge: Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to craft your personal leadership blueprint and break through to your own style of leadership, ensuring your mission to leadership success in just 4-6 weeks.
I say to my clients: Imagine stepping into your office, feeling the weight of new responsibilities paired with the exhilaration of knowing you’re fully prepared. Colleagues look to you for guidance, and you confidently navigate through complex decisions with ease. You’ve become a beacon of ethical leadership, with a clear vision that inspires your team. In meetings, your voice carries the weight of authority, tempered with the wisdom of a leader who’s truly found their stride.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Kentlands in Gaithersburg and the Rio in Gaithersburg and of course Downtown Washington, DC museums.
