I began dancing in college while being a competitive gymnast. I took a choreography class and KNEW during my first solo performance that I wanted to do THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE! Dance and Music. Fast forward 25 years. my knees hurt from the years of intense gymnastics, dance, trapeze, acrobatics and I had to fix this. I was introduced to Pilates and realized this would help me in the future. I sold my dance school about 5 years later and was helping my friend in her very successful Dance & Circus Arts School in Florida. I got offered a job teaching at a new Pilates studio and knew this was the opportunity to start this career – my second career. I got trained in Toronto at the STOTT Pilates International Center which combined classic pilates with rehab techniques. The training was excellent and gave me the tools I needed and wanted to help myself and others ‘reverse aging and body overuse’ by retraining the body from the inside out. I have worked with many modalities and found that Pilates is the perfect base to start from. But I also use Egoscue Technique, dance strengthening and stretching techniques, Alexander Technique, Bikram yoga exercises and what ever is needed for the person in front of me to get the help they need to gain the power, flexibility and control to build and maintain excellent fitness and remain pain free.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take that person to the Getty Museums, to the northern Malibu for a swim and long walk, to Lake Arrowhead to breathe in the mountain air and walk around the nearby Lake Gregory. We would stay at my friends very rustic 100 year old trappers cabin and build a fire to stay warm, drink tea and look at the fabulous sky. We would go to the Hollywood Bowl to see a performance and the Disney Hall to experience Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil. We would drive to Ojai and visit an amazing artist friend and play music and dance. We would go to the Urth Cafe in Pasadena and have a Chai Latte, and browse Vrommens Book Store for hours. Step into Athleta to shop for top of the line sportswear. On Sunday we would go to the Hollywood Farmers Market buy wonderful food and fresh fish and grill it for dinner. We would tour the stunning famous Château Élysée Hotel, now the religious retreat of the Church of Scientology and have lunch in the Renaissance Restaurant. Then we would sweep through the Getty Villa for an afternoon of aesthetics.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Classic Pilates Trainer, Mickey Terra fixed my knees in 10 sessions with utmost confidence and total certainty of her own ability.
