Taking Risk is essential, but how much, when and why? Taking risks effectively is as much of an art as it is a science and we’ve asked some of the brightest folks in the community to tell us about how they think about risk taking.

Risk taking has played a big role in my life and career. The older I get, I realize that the best in people often comes out when they step into uncharted territory and that has been my personal experience as well. Risk is something that I used to be extra cautious about in my earlier years. Pre-Covid, I planned my life out year by year. When I watched the world around me dissipate as a fresh college graduate, along with job offers at labels and talent agencies, I learned quickly how unpredictable life can be. I view taking risks as essential to personal and professional growth. During Covid, I made a decision to move from Toronto to Los Angeles to pursue acting. I left behind my family, friends and everything familiar to start over in a new country. This leap required courage and forced me to adapt quickly. The challenges I faced, from finding new community to navigating a new industry, taught me resilience and sharpened my skills. You’ll never accomplish anything great in life without taking a little bit of risk. Career, love, art—whatever it is—it all requires risk. And if we’re willing to throw it all to the wind and just see what happens, sometimes life changing things can unfold… and sometimes not. Risk is very important. When you are in your twenties, much like fitness, it comes naturally. As you grow older you have to actively exercise it just like a muscle. As you mature as a person, as an entrepreneur, and as a business, you tend to get risk-averse. You are more comfortable so there is not as much need, but you also have more to lose.
