We asked insiders and experts from various industries to tell us something they think outsiders are unaware of and we’ve shared a few of those responses below.

Elizabeth Alligood | Founder of the Elizabeth Alligood & Associates | coach

So many people think this industry is easy. There was an influx of people getting their real estate license in the past few years who had that mentality. And now…when the market is more normalized, there’s a shortage of homes yet an influx of buyers, you have to work even harder just to survive.  I also probably get a couple times a week of people asking me if it’s like the reality TV shows…it definitely is not, and you shouldn’t believe everything you see on TV. Especially reality TV. Real estate is one of the most litigious industries you can be in and as a real estate agent. There are so many moving parts even before you get into escrow that people don’t see or realize. Read more>>

Jenna Michele | Potter

One thing outsiders do not know about having a ceramic business is that it is VERY expensive to sustain. The problem I think most ceramicists have is that people are used to mug prices at department stores and they don’t really quite understand how much education, time and money it takes to make just 1 mug. The clay I use was $13 dollars a bag when I started a few years ago and now it’s $27 and glazes are now averaging $30 for 16fl oz, the price of pottery tools is also a factor. At minimum you need a wheel, clay, a bucket, a sponge a wire, a rib and bats just to throw the piece. Then you need a kiln to fire the piece and all of that means nothing if you dknt have the knowledge it require to throw a piece and to fire. Read more>>

Easton Edwin | Casting Director & Talent Producer

Growing up not having any insight on what really goes into a creating a tv show, film, or commercial, was a huge learning experience for me when I entered this industry. I believe that the majority of people will never truly understand the extensive process, nor the vast amount of departments, ideas, positions and crew that serve each project. From development, selling an idea, to casting, producing, post and distributing (a very, very brief description of a long list), there are so many levels and hands that make these dreams a reality. Having worked in this industry for 14 years, there is still so much that I am learning about it, and so much more that I will continue to learn about it. With each position comes an abundance of duties, and skill sets. Read more>>
