One often overlooked aspect of the doula industry is the diverse landscape of training and certification paths. Unlike some professions, there isn’t a singular regulating or certifying entity for doulas. It’s a spectrum where doulas may be self-trained, trained without certification, or certified through various certifying bodies. Each individual doula brings their own experience, knowledge, and education to the table. The amount of complete and utter rejection you will endure as a maker of art within the realm of competitive entertainment commerce. Funny, I almost said “failure” as opposed to rejection, but that’s not necessarily true. True failure in this industry (as far as I’m concerned) really comes from within the individual completely giving up, and not dusting themselves off to have another go. Suffice to say I’ve been knocked straight on my keister many a time. I’m sure I’ll likely find myself on my ass again next week if not tomorrow. One thing that outsiders are probably unaware of is how much work and details are behind the scenes. When you’re not in the industry you’re just used to seeing the completed picture no matter what it is. You don’t realize how many people are involved in executing every frame that you as a viewer sees on the screen. When you see a movie or a series or a play it all starts with an idea and the execution of that idea all begins with the writing of it. Once a story is written and rewritten and you feel it’s ready, you embark on a long process of number one getting feedback, number two planning how to execute that idea, whether you’re going to sell it, make it alone, get it auctioned etc. Each of those routes are long and difficult endeavours that all lead to the big picture on the screen.
