What’s one of the most important decisions you’ve made?

We asked folks to tell us about the most important decisions they’ve made along their journey and have shared some of the highlights below.

This is kind of a hard question, but to sum it up… when I started my company Hilldog Productions back in 2009, the plan was to produce my own projects from script to screen. But what happened was, my first film “Troublesome” amazingly became Critically Acclaimed, which meant, more eyes were on me right out the gate. Writers began to ask me to help produce their works, so my mandate quickly changed, so I pivoted. I became known as a producer who can really help writers complete their projects from script-to-screen and was able to bring production value and sometimes, product placement to certain films to really help them stand out an shine across the festival circuit. I was supporting a family as a teacher and high school counselor. This was my day job. But my mission in life, and my “sacred path,” was that of an artist and a creative–primarily through working in film. When I started as an actor in my 30s, although I loved acting and actors, I found that it was so competitive that I had to find a way to distinguish myself from all the other white, male actors in my age range. Also, the roles that I would go out for or be cast in were not leading roles, which I wanted, and they were sometimes not a good fit for particular “essence” qualities as a human being and as an actor. Never giving up on the project even when there’s no promise of money or fame. Also staying passionate no matter how hard it gets or who you end up working with or without. Accepting the twist and turns and new things to learn about the industry and the people in it. Staying positive even when things happen that are not apart of the plan. Not really having a plan because this industry is so unpredictable but that’s why I love it! Never boring! Read More>>
