What’s one thing about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?

We asked experts from a broad range of industries to open up to us about things they know about their industry but that we probably don’t and we’ve shared some of those responses below.

Social media can make it look like photographers are always at cool locations, camera in hand, living a pretty cushy work life. While that certainly does happen at moments, it’s just like the majority of modern jobs — plopped in front of a computer. Some of that computer work is fun and creative; much of it is the administrative backend needed to run a business, none of which we are actually very good at. It’s a struggle! Everyone uses Autotune or some sort of tuning assistance when recording vocals, regardless of naturally vocal capability (& many people use Autotune when performing live!). That black owned businesses don’t make it to the 5 year mark. Gaining support and capital is a lot harder when you aren’t in the majority, especially when you tie in that you support other minority and marginalized groups. In my industry of crafting and curating Accessories, there is a huge stigma around black owned businesses that a large majority of consumers continue to keep alive by not buying from our businesses which can and has led to many black owned businesses to close down, due to the lack of resources and overall support. Recently, I’ve been thinking about the lack of public awareness regarding the immense effort required to bring a film to life. Both physically and mentally, the process of filmmaking demands tremendous dedication in order to actualize the story that a filmmaker initially envisioned. It’s also a shock to realize that there are far more films in production than what ultimately make it to theaters or streaming platforms.
