We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelley-Ann Lindo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelley-Ann, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Art has always been the place where there weren’t any restrictions or limitations. It creates a space for conversation and ideas which resonate beyond myself and my immediate surroundings. It also grants us possibilities to imagine and reimagine realities, spaces, and futures.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Oral histories play a significant role in preserving one’s cultural identity and understanding the past. Storytelling then becomes a really important tool for advocating for one’s presence and using those kinds of materials as a way of self-actualization.

My work employs a range of material to explore ideas around the archive, memory, trauma, and its relationship to identity in the Caribbean. I examine intrusions, recollections, imaginary representations of truth, and false memory in postcolonial spaces in drawings, solvent transfer prints, videos, and installations.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Community plays a significant role not only in my art practice but in my life overall. In a way, everyone I have had the opportunity to share space with has contributed to where I am now currently. So a huge thanks to those I’ve met along the way. Also a special thanks to those who came before me and to those with who I’ll share space in the future with. My mentor, Ebony G. Patterson, has always told me to not only think about how others have helped me along my journey but also how I’m able to pay it forward. That has always stuck with me.
