Meet Mark DeBonis: Comedian

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark DeBonis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, how do you think about risk?
I personally think risk-taking is what separates good from great. You can be good at what you do, but until you have the confidence to take risks and fail you may never achieve greatness… IN my opinion at least… When I started stand-up I didn’t know anything about it or the industry so I would take bigger risks not knowing the impact it may have on my “presence” or “name” in the comedy scene. Since that time I have toned down the number of risks, but still, take them when needed.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In the world of stand-up, it’s hard to compare yourself with others. Everyone has their own path, so I do not know exactly what makes me different but I can tell you I am excited about a couple of things that have been in the works. One of them is the recent release of my new concept album “Minutiae” which is produced by Comedy Records. This was a big accomplishment for me because it is a mix of stand-up and sketch comedy. I have never done sketch before but from what I’m hearing people seem to like it! I would like to have a follow-up in the coming years. If I could be known for anything, it would be taking risks. My ideal audience would be people who like me for me and enjoy my process of creating. That’s when it’s good and bad. That to me would be the best-case scenario. One of the other projects I’ve been excited about is my new podcast! My First Trek, I’m actually watching Star Trek FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! It’s been a pretty cool experience, every episode I talk to a Trekkie fan and they tell me how they got into it and what Star Trek means to them. So if you are into podcasts and/or Star Trek give that a listen!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I enjoy a place called R-Bar it’s in K-Town and has a speak-easy vibe. This place really has a good vibe so when I’m there I can just think and have a drink. I would then take them next door to Sabores Oaxaqueños Restaurant which has again in my opinion really good food!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to give a big shoutout to Barry Taylor and the Comedy Records team. They have been going for 10 years strong! One of the first, if not the first record label in Canada. Comedy Records not only has an amazing roster of comedians but also has paved the way for a lot of us. From college tours to producing albums. I personally do not think I would be where I am today without them. So yeah for sure checkout Comedy Records and see all the great stuff they have done!
