We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Simmons-Santa Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to have control over my music catalog and publishing, so I thought starting my own production company with my partner/husband Flinstone would do just that.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I love what I do, and have been doing it for as long as I can remember. I take time thinking about the lyric’s I write and how I want the singer to be portrayed, Everything I do is intentional and thought out. I work with my husband who is also a platinum music producer. It isn’t very common in our industry for married couple’s to work together ( other than Ashford and Simpson) but we work really well together, and I enjoy the time we spend creating. I got my start in the music industry as a recording artist, and doing back-up for other recording artist, as well as writing for them, all while working on my debut album under Elektra Records. I love YeHoVaH, and my relationship with him. My entire career has been God placing idea’s/ instruction’s in my heart, and me being obedient and following them. There was no plan to do specific thing’s or be at the right place at the right time, I literally prayed and God answered every time. It sound’s magical, but it is very spiritual and supernatural. Flinstone and I work really hard perfecting our sound-always. We know that if we enjoy what we do then other’s will too. We have spent year’s learning how to mix and master all of our record’s so when someone come’s to us for music, they will get a completed song, from lyrics, melody, production, mixing mastering and background vocal’s. We take pride in our music because we want people to want to hear what we enjoy making just for them. We also write and produce for TV & Film and carry the same work ethic when working with music supervisors and library companies. I have learned to never compromise who you are. Have integrity and when everyone else is going left, you go right. Be set apart.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would totally have to start the day off at Amara Chocolate and Coffee, the funny thing is I don’t like Chocolate or drink Coffee, but they have the best Chocolate hand’s down. I get their churros and different varieties of lemonade’s. Next I would have to drive to Agoura Hill’s to my favorite sandwich spot. It’s called Italia Deli & Bakery. After that, I would have to drive back toward’s Malibu and drive down PCH and listen to our music, I always listen to our final mixes driving down PCH, it’s relaxing and fun, and we are in Covid so not a lot happening right now. Next we would have to head back to Pasadena to have dinner at Teddy’s Taco’s in Pasadena. We could literally do the same thing all weekend. I’m totally low-maintenance and a homebody.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a huge thank you to my music partner Flinstone. I was blessed to do a lot (musically) prior to my joining creative forces with him, but he truly solidified my wanting to branch off on my own as an independent music producer/songwriter and find a sound that I feel people would recognize as being from us.
