We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Dair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My balance has changed a lot in the last few years. I used to have the go go go mentality and never took time to rest. My motto used to be “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” and I lived by that. However, I learned that when you run at 110% consistently, you’re more likely to burnout. While 2020 was a ridiculously hard year, I learned a lot about real self-care and taking care of myself. As 2021 starts to ramp up and my schedule is busier, I’m making it a priority to have work/life balance. When you’re an artist, work can sometimes follow you around, so it’s really important to let yourself breathe and have a break every once and a while. I think it’s necessary, not only for mental health but also so that you can perform your best.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Music for me was always an outlet for expression and creation. As a kid, I didn’t always know how to express my feelings. So I turned to music and writing to find the words and understand what I felt. I’ve always wanted to be transparent and share even the most unpleasant feelings and songs with my fans. It can be hard to be a human and I want everyone to know that they are not alone. I’ve always wanted to be intimate and vulnerable. If someone asks me who/what a song is about, I’ll tell them without hesitating. My journey to where I am today has been nearly 10 years in the making. I wrote and recorded my first EP at 12, started a band, played all over Southern California, starred on a FOX TV show, had a band break up, released a second EP, wrote A LOT of songs, went to college, won a few songwriting contests, wrote with Linkin Park, graduated from college, started grad school, graduated grad school, wrote more songs with big writers, released singles, went through a massive writing slump, and now I’m creating songs that make me so proud to be a writer. None of it was easy, but all of it was worth it. At the end of the day, all of the good moments make up for the struggle it took to get there. I think the most important thing to remember is growth is not linear, there are many ups and downs in the journey, but you have to keep moving forward.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles literally has everything!! Assuming the world is open again, I would take them to all of my favorites: Favorite Bar: Tramp Stamp Grannies (Showtunes Bar) Favorite Taco Place: Diablos Tacos Favorite Sight Seeing Place: Griffith Observatory Favorite Coffee Shop: The Bougerious Pig Favorite Weekend Activity: Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Nuart Theatre Favorite Music Venue(s): The Troubadour, The Hollywood Bowl, The Wiltern Favorite Pie Place: Republic of Pie Favorite Hiking Spot: Vasquez Rocks Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t do what I do without my family and I certainly wouldn’t be where I am in my career without them! If it weren’t for my mom and grandma, I would probably still be in Alaska and not chasing my dream. They mean the world to me. So Mom, Dad, Ahna, and Micah, thanks for all that you do and all of your support!
