Meet Estee Cohen: Director of Recruiting at California Job Shop

We had the good fortune of connecting with Estee Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Estee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had worked for 2 recruiting companies, one that catered to filling C-suite positions for large non-profits and charged extremely high prices per recruit and another that focused on larger companies that charged 8% of annual salary per recruit. I am from the small business world and realized there was a hole in the market and that no one out there was catering to the needs of smaller businesses (15-500 employees). I knew, with the right team and systems in place, we could recruit great people quickly and at a less expensive price. We fill jobs within 30 days and for less than half of what our competitors charge without compromising on our quality or customer service.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I knew we were on to something based on the immediate huge response after I opened a Facebook page saying we were offering recruiting services to small businesses. I never imagined it would grow to where we are today, filling 40-60 positions monthly. I feel very blessed to have tapped into something that the business world was waiting for and to build a strong team that works hard every day to find and vet excellent employees for wonderful employers. I learned quickly that our price is unbeatable, and if someone tries to get a deeper discount they are simply not ready to make a hire or are not ready to utilize any professional service, it’s not really about price! I also learned that with new customers it’s best to take on just one job to fill at first and see how things go- either we will hit if off and work together for years, or we are simply not a match. I definitely learn from mistakes and grow a little every day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What a great question! I’m an LA native (third generation!) and there is so much to do here! I would definitely book a musical at Pantages Theaters and take them out to lunch at The Milky Way on Pico Blvd. and dinner at La Gondola in Beverly Hills. Larchmont is a really fun street to check with cute boutiques and a great farmer’s market on the weekend.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Huge shout out to my husband who always believed in my ideas and continues to act as a sounding board.
