We had the good fortune of connecting with Jane Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jane, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My success can be attributed to the balance of two key factors. I know I’m already skirting the question, but for me, one cannot thrive without the other! Combining the skills achieved by constant work, with an actively maintained youthful freedom creates work that has ease, intrigue and oddity. The age old “ten thousand hours” spent working on my craft allows me the freedom to create inspired work, without getting in my own way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe I was placed on this earth to explore and expand my artistry through constant effort and observation. What you put in, is what you get out, and that has been my biggest success. It hasn’t always been easy, because comparison is a real beast, but continual work is the road to success, in my estimation. I am my biggest obstacle, and that’s not always an easy lesson to remember. I’ve learned not to take things personally, approach each client with genuine excitement and gratitude, and show up to all projects prepared and organized.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love it when my people visit the city, because this city has such a way with magical weekends. For food, we would probably eat at Ruen Pair in Thai Town, Desano’s pizza in Little Armenia, Night + Market Song in Silver Lake, STREET TACOS, or anything else that struck their fancy! I have special thrift spots we would definitely hit up, take long walks through the neighborhoods in Silver Lake, car rides in Beverly Hills, dancing at clubs, hitting a show, sunset drinks on our roof, museums, art shows, drinks on the sidewalk in Los Feliz…. oh no! Now i’m sentimental for pre-covid LA! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The more I look around, the more I realize I’m one of the lucky ones. The people who’ve come into my life, via parents, friends, colleagues, are inspired and have different points of view. My circle teaches me to look at the world through a different lens, and push myself to new creative and personal heights. To give specific recognition, my friends Erin Soorenko and Robbie Shilstone are some of my dearest friends and collaborators. We share what we’re working on, thinking about, and how to explore the parameters of our day.
