We had the good fortune of connecting with rana bacaloni and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi rana, what do you want people to remember about you?
What do you want your legacy to be? What do you want people to remember about you?
While in college, as I started contemplating career goals, I reflected upon what path I can take that would make an impact on society; I was inspired by a quote in the Quran that says that our deeds and the imprint we leave behind are all documented. I wanted to be a person that leaves a legacy behind. My aspiration was to work for the nonprofit sector or be part of a think tank that involves diplomacy and thus my major in International relations. Yet fate had another route for me; I got married and had children and ended up spending time raising them.
I was volunteering at their school, as an event and fundraiser chair, when I realized that there was nothing out there for islamic holidays for purchase. This is when I embarked on the journey of starting my own company called Eid Creations, where I was designing and mass producing Ramadan and Eid party supplies.
The road was initially an uphill battle, since I was paving a way into uncharted territory, where I had to convince stores of the viability of the product and the need to offer this service to the islamic community. It took years to expand the market and we now see this niche market fully developed with products in mainstream stores such as Party City and Oriental Trading.
I do not wish to be part of the list of forgotten innovators whom no one acknowledges, like Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra whose idea inspired Zuckerberg to start Facebook, or the third founder of apple, Ronald Wayne who gave up all claims of ownership for $1,500, or the inventor of the world wide web who did not patent his idea and made his idea available for free never to be acknowledge. I would like people to know that the reason Ramadan and Eid Party supplies exist today, is because of the hard work, sacrifice and persistence that Eid Creations put in since its inception in 2011.
What should our readers know about your business?
Eid Creations offers Curated assortment of partyware inspired by world travels…
Inspired by world cultures, our elegant porcelain-like plates and unique decorations open a whole new world of entertainment possibilities for you, your guests, your events and your tablescapes.
Where I began…
As the fundraising and event chair at her children’s school, I saw a gap in the party decor market when I was organizing events for Ramadan and Eid. Realizing that I couldn’t be the only person who wanted beautifully crafted party decor for such occasions, I decided to fill the void in this non existent niche market by creating her own upscale paper products.
In 2011, Eid Creations was the first company to design and mass produce for Ramadan and Eid holidays.
With the success of the Islamic holiday party lines, I wanted to share my love of cultures, parties and tableware with everyone! In 2019, I launched our mix and match concept for all occasions. Every piece can be combined to create a table setting as unique as the client.
My inspiration…
Fluent in five languages, Rana is truly a citizen of the world having travelled extensively around the world and having lived in cities such as Beirut, Paris, Rome and Geneva before ultimately calling Los Angeles home.
It took mostly patience and perseverance to run any business. You have to be willing to take risks and have to be able to take on challenges and keep reinventing yourself when the market changes or takes a hit like the past year with covid.
I would like people to support small businesses who are mostly innovators with great ideas and who are vulnerable to larger companies and copyright attacks.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Every time I have a friend visit from out of town, I love to show them the beaches of LA, mostly the Beaches of the South Bay, where life is more mellow. I love how each town has its character. Manhattan Beach with its exclusive homes, boutiques and restaurants, Hermosa Beach beach with its young vibrant crowds and Redondo Beach where families hang out. I would take them to eat in family restaurants, I am not too fond of chains. Riviera Village has a great selection of eateries. We can go biking pier to pier and stop at local coffee shops along the way. Los Angeles, has the most interesting and exciting people. It is a true melting pot where every one, regardless of their color, religion, origin or orientation, feels at home. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
my shoutout goes to all innovators who do not get recognition in their uphill struggles as they pave the way for a new product or idea. I would like to give a shoutout to @littlelifeofmine, an influencer who believed in my idea and products and promoted them as soon as she saw them, when other people were skeptical of them. My mother Saria Mahmoud, who has always been my biggest cheerleader. My friend @juliaperrystyle, a stylist, who helped me reinvent my image as I was launching my website.
