Meet Kim McVicar: Stand Up Comedian

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim McVicar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
For me when it comes to goals, it’s a simple weigh your pros and cons. If it brings you joy keep going, but if in doing so it hurts others – meaning you can’t pay your bills, you can’t take care of your children, or whatever your personal circumstances are – then that’s when you really have to think about giving up. And maybe it’s not giving up forever, it’s just putting it on pause and refocusing your energy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a comedian and former professional dancer (emphasis on former) originally from Canada. As a dancer I toured a lot, so I’ve always enjoyed the stage, but I do love to talk and LOVE to make people laugh. So I tried stand up about 9 years ago in the back of iO West in LA to an audience of like 6 people, 5 of whom I knew. I learned a lot that night, like that you need a punch line.
I continued to grind by hitting as many mics as I could for years I now I have a standup special out and another one in the works for summer of 2022. For me, the process is just always be working on your material. I enjoy going to open mics – and the grind of it.
My standup special “Kim McVicar: Please Notice Me” can be seen on Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, and many more streaming services. You can hear some jokes of mine regularly on SirusXM (She’s So Funny, RawDog), Spotify and more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Right now I like eating at Home Restaurant, they have great salads and great streaks (if you like meat). I also love to go to Little Don’s for their fresh chocolate chip cookies they are so delicious and they put a little salt on them they’re perfect!
As for a night out, I’d say The Improv or The Comedy Store, especially on a weeknight. There’s something really fun and exciting about watching a famous comedian work on new material.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As cheesy as this might sound it’s got to be Reeta Piazza at The Hollywood Improv. She sits in the back and listens to comics, gives them advice and gives some chances to get up in front of a real audience. I really appreciate all that she does for the comedy community. During COVID, she spent her time in zoom meeting with comics to make sure people were doing well, and staying with their goals. Reeta definitely deserves the shout out!
